Boat cover question - how to keep pole in place?

This could be super simple, but I'll ask for suggestions anyway.

When the cover is on front seems pole seems to stay pretty still. Rubber footing stays in place while trailoring pretty good. The rear pole is a different story. I put some velcro under the rear foot to hold it to the carpet but it still manages to fall over while in transit. When it falls the back end gets baggy and flaps around coming loose off the back of the boat. How do I keep the darn pole in place?

I'm not sure I can extend my pole any further to apply more tension so hopefully someone has a simple solution. :)

Thx.

If the pole sits in a low traffic area you can add a screw in snap to the floor and end of the pole. Otherwise find a wider base to put the rubber foot into or add collapsible tripod legs to the pole like that on a camera pedestal.

Get a pole that uses an in-deck fitting so that it can't move. Secondly, your cover may not be designed to be used as a "trailerable" cover. If there's no reason to leave the cover on the boat, just tow with it off and put it on when you get where you are going.

don't trailer with the cover on--for this and other reasons.

The pole goes through a grommet in the cover right? Mine used to always fall down in a strong wind, the top that pokes through the cover is plastic, so I drilled a little hole and put a pin in it..similar to what you use to hold the main pin on a trailer hitch. Now if the wind blows the cover up the pole goes up with it and lands back in the same spot.

Short piece of 2x6 with a hole the same diameter as the pole makes a good base.

I'm getting the boat out of storage tonight and will take a closer look. A simple snap would be nice but it's a high traffic area. Making the pole tripod:ish is a good idea too.

The cover has a "slip" for the pole to go in to to hold it up and in place at the top side (cover side). The bottom simply bounces on the floor and slides out falling down. I added some of the rough side of velcro which helped some.

I don't want to trailer very far without the cover because the last time I did the engine cover managed to open somehow (I likely left it unsnapped) and it broke the hydraulic lifts. Plus, I'd rather put the cover on at my house and drop at the storage location ready to go instead of taking the cover and putting it together while onsite. :)

Any boat cover issues I've ever encountered have been solved by PVC pipe and assorted fittings.

You can make a wide base that fits in/around/between seat bases/etc that you drop into place in 1 second knowing it won't move, and you can pull and cinch down on the cover and that support won't move.

Put five minutes of thought into now and you won't have to do much later other than drop it into place.

Yeah, I was thinking about the 2x6 deal earlier but using plastic to keep weight down... basically a 6" square with a round hold in it where the pole will go. I'll then use the rough side of velcro under the square to keep it from sliding around on the carpet. The plastic should be cheap and I already have velcro, simple. :)

I used to have poles, but now I use 2" PVC pipe with elbows and T's, and "feet" at the bottom so the pole can't fall over, side to side, and a pole across the top, to the next pole, to keep it from falling front to back. Very happy with this set up, through high winds and towing, and it's cheap.

1) The cover is too loose, not cinched down tight enough.
2) The cover is not meant to be a towed with.
3) The material the cover is made out of stretches too much, , , and probably should not be towed with.

Re: Boat cover question - how to keep pole in place?

I bought my boat new in 2001 and part of the deal was a good price ($400) on a custom canvas cover. The cover has snaps built in to it that snap into the poles keeping them attached to the cover. Of course this cove fits the boat very snugly so it may not be applicable to a "one cover fits many" type of application.

Are the poles adjustable? If you make them taller... it will be tighter and keep them in place. My cover has a strap with a snap that attaches to the pole. Holds pretty good... but i dont trailer with my cover on.
