So i took the boat out a couple weeks ago and ONE of the problems was that the boat would not shut off with the key... First it took a little bit to get started but once i did then ran it for awhile then went to shut it off with the key it wouldnt shut off i had to pull two spark plug wire to get the boat to shut off.... ( Started the boat with the key)... Any help would be great. Volvo penta 230a 1991... Could this be the switch or what else???? Thanks

Replacing the ignition switch is relatively quick and inexpensive. You can trouble shoot with a test light first if you want verification.

Or just remove the start wire off of the ignition switch.

Bruce,
The start circuit simply enables the motor to start, correct? Isn't there a separate shutdown circuit, such as a ground to the coil?

LOL. I must have had this thread confused with another one where the starter was always cranking with the battery connected. No ground to the coil needed. Just stop supplying 12V to the positive side.

To the OP...Have you replaced your alternator lately? Possible that a miswire replacing that could cause this problem

No, that is how an outboard works. With an IO, they just remove power from the ignition system.

To start isolating items, with the key in the run position and the engine off, you should have power to the + terminal of the coil (Purple Wire). With the key in the off position, you shouldn't have power to the coil. That is all there is.
If this is how it works with the engine off.
Then try it with the engine running. Turn the key off and if the engine keeps running, remove the purple wire from the ignition switch. If it keeps running, the ignition switch is not your problem. You have something in the wiring harness putting power to the coil, probably the alternator.
Look at the back of the alternator, it should have a resistor attached to the purple wire and the D+ terminal on the alternator, do you ? if not, that could be your problem.

Here is what the resistor (PN 834784) looks like.

If you messed up the wiring, it's possible.

But you have a bigger problem. That automotive alternator isn't spark-protected and could cause an explosion if gasoline fumes come in contact with it while the engine is running.

What did you do with the purple wire and the resistor?

yes i understand it could cause a fire but if i have the blower on i think everything should be fine. Also whats the different between a boat engine compartment and a car engine compartment ????... Anyways the purple wire and the resistor are no longer hooked up they just sit there.

Re: Boat doesnt shut off with key

The bottom of a car engine is open to the road, the fan is pulling tons of fresh air in gasoline fumes dont collect underneath the engine, the fuel tank is in the rear and the vapor out the back etc etc... In a boat, the engine is basically enclosed, the fuel tank is in front of and usually slightly above creating a low point in the engine compartment. USCG puts out rules and regulations from experience! Boats blow up all the time and its mainly I/O's with a blower not working, right as you start. All it takes is just enough vapor and one spark=BOOMBUS. Please tell me that if you bring passengers you tell them the boat is now experimental, a test to see how long before it blows up?

Re: Boat doesnt shut off with key

Well you make some good points. I always have my blower on when i run my engine, is this enough to avoid a fire???? Or should i scrap this one wire automotive alternator ???? And man up and but the correct alternator???? And if so where can i find one for a 1991 volvo penta 230a? Because someones life is not worth loosing over a cheap alternator.

Please replace your automotive alternator with a correct marine version. For safety sake.
