Boat Flipping?

Hello iboaters. I'm new to iboats, however, I have been reading posts for a few months now. Doing my best to stock up on knowledge before tackling my own resto. I've already bought a boat and ordered some parts for the engine. I have a basic plan on what I'm going to do with it but some of the details are a little fuzzy. Which leads me to a few of questions.

1) When flipping the hull over to paint/repair (which seems the most viable option for me) should that be done after the stringers are replaced or before?

2) If before, should it be with the top cap on or off?

3) What would be a good way to go about doing so?

Preemptive thank you's for your answers and expertise.

I was going to post pics but they were too large. I'll have them up as soon as i can figure out how to either shrink them or take "smaller" pics.

get a photobucket account or a webshots account for posting photos. that way you only have to post the html link.

however regarding flipping your boat. you would want to do it post stringer repair and with the cap on. you will want to support the hull adequately for the stringer repair to make sure the hull remains straight.

flipping the hull without stringers and the cap and the hull can potentially fold up

Re: Boat Flipping?

How big is the boat? That can make a big difference on how you flip it. I'm guessing it is the Glastron in your avatar. Two engine hoists work pretty well for smaller boats.

Looking at your pics I thought, Man that looks like Texarkana. Then I saw you are in Arkansas. LOL. That thing is pretty small. Pull the motor and trolling motor and get a couple of buddies to help pick it up and flip it. A stack of old tires makes a good pad to protect the sides while you roll it.

Re: Boat Flipping?

Thanks, that's a great idea. I didn't even think about tires. As soon as I get her stringers gutted and transom redone I'll most likely use the tire plan. Its really nice out today so I'm going to get a little more done. so far I've removed most of the hardware on the gunwales and all that was on the decking, as well as taken up a portion of the decking to see what I was working with. Also, I've removed the motor to a stand which was built using plans found here on iboats and ordered parts for said motor. She has been sitting for some time, at least three years from what I know of her. My plan for the day is to get the rest of the hardware removed from the gunwales and the exterior of the hull and hopefully get the rest of the deck and foam out. Maybe if I can work efficiently enough I'll be able to start sanding some of the inside hull. I'll be sure to document my progress. Thanks again for the suggestions

I'd strip her down, Remove the deck and stringers, pull her off the trailer onto the grass and roll her over. My two nephews did mine and she's bigger than your's. Build a cradle like this...

Cost me 60 bucks to build it.

Not a bad idea either. That one definitely is more mobile in case I need to move her around.

I did not get as much done as I wanted or was expecting the other day. However, I did tear into my motor today because my parts came in and the weather was not conducive to actually working on the boat herself. I've got tomorrow off too but it is supposed to be even worse outside then so I will not be able to do anything tomorrow either. :( As soon as I can though (Monday's my next day off) I will be back at it. Greasing my elbows.

Would it be strong enough to glass in the stringers with just csm or some other material? Say, an 8 1/2 oz. fabric as opposed to 1708?
