Boat for rent, would you do it?

I guess again, 4th of July, and lots of people asking if they can rent a boat.

Would any of you even consider this? I mean, even if it is an older boat, most probably don't have the knowledge how to operate a boat properly. And every boat is different.

And how would you know if they are using the right fuel, or mixture? Or pay attention when something just does not feel or sound right?

I would never do that. I mean, to a good buddy who is a boater, yes. But otherwise, no way. How about you?

Why don't you hire yourself out with the boat? That way you get to look after the boat and be on the water. Another plus is you could charge a little as an experienced boater.

Just a thought....

Ayuh,.... Sure,.... I'd rent out my $2500., 34 year old Tinbarge, for, oh, say, a Grand a day, 'n an open creditcard account for a deposit....

'ell No, I wouldn't rent out My primary barge,...

A canoe or kayak, or the rowboat, 'n motor, I might...
the houseboat, I'm hopin' to start next season, but it'll never leaves it's dock, just as rooms... for the fisheads, at the marina...

For a Good Bud, he could borrow any 1 of 'em,.... But My primary barge.... ;)

to the original question, not a chance.

be careful. your insurance co would probably take a dim view if they found out you're for hire. could be some other regs you run afoul of too.

Only with the understanding that I will be at the helm. And, plan on feeding the gas tank and me.

Nooooo Wayyy...

Sure, my boat isn't worth a whole lot, but I've put soo much time and money into it (dont' we all :) that I'll never let someone else use it, unless they are a close friend that knows what they are doing and will respect my equiptment. I'm happy to take people out and will even let them drive if they want to, but I'm in charge.

Only people allowed to operate our boat without me being there are as follows.
My son (1 of them only)
My best friend (also a boater with a very similar boat and the favour works both ways)
My Dad (who taught me all I know about boating and is now 89 years old)

People allowed to operate our boat with me on board are as follows.
The rest of the immediate family.

That's it.

The only person I woudl ever even consider letting take my boat would be my fishing buddy, other than that no.

There are way to many liability issues, as long as lawyers roam the earth it is a very high risk deal.

Re: Boat for rent, would you do it?

I suppose we do in a certain sense as we rent the cottage a few weeks every summer. With that goes access to the kayak and canoes. But a powerboat? Nope.

I did lend myself out once about 15 years ago when i was hanging about a local launch ramp that happened to be next to an historic lake cruise operator because I love watching the old steamer come and go. About ten minutes after it departed a car came skidding into the parking lot and this family came tumbling out. They were visiting from the UK and wanted to go on the cruise but missed it having miscalculated the drive a bit. They were heartbroken at not getting out on the lake.

I was within earshot of all this and I didn't have anywhere special to be so I offered to drive them around a bit myself. They were gobsmacked someone would offer and kept trying to pay me, which I refused.

Ended up being a fun hour playing tour guide and the were so thankful. I suppose I might have been asking to get boatjacked but it smelled legit to me. Specially with ol Granny tottering in tow.

Re: Boat for rent, would you do it?

You have answered your own question. it's a question that gets asked a lot.

There really isn't any upside to renting out your typical recreational boat at what would be a fair market rate. And for many of you who have trailer/ramp as part of your boating day, the risk of mishap is increased way above those who keep the boat in the water.

If you take any compensation for someone to use or ride on your boat, you jeopardize your insurance coverage. This includes taking gas money, or really, anything of value, in exchange for the trip, even if you just cover costs and don't make a profit. So renting to a stranger, or advertising a fishing trip for $50 a head, is a bad idea. Taking gas money from friends is a little more gray; the important element is whether the payment was a condition for the ride.

In this instance you can use your cars as an anaolgy. Let's say you own a 10 year old basic pick-up truck, and a cool 1950's vintage Cadillac convertible. Me, I'd lend the truck to about anyone I know if they needed it to move something one day. I might lend the Caddy to a close friend for their daughter's wedding from church to reception, maybe a nephew for prom, maybe not. All situational, including how responsible the driver is. I wouldn't rent either to a stranger--not worth it.

I would lend my boats to any of my friends who are experienced boaters (any who would ask are, which is most of my friends) because I like to see them used and I am a nice guy. And I regard my boats like I would the pick-up. If I had a vintage restored boat, no. (I don't understand the people who post here, who regard their 15 year old bowrider bayliner sofaboat like it's some vintage gem). I would like to see it returned full of gas, and if they used it extensively, would appreciate, but would not expect or condition, something like a case of oil, fishing tackle, a bottle, etc.

I also don't understand the attitude of people who won't let their children use the boat. Around here, people buy their boats with their children in mind, get them using it and doing everything at a very young age, and get a thrill when they are "big enough" to take it out by themselves. Obviously talking about a typical recreational boat, not a cabin cruiser, and not 6 year olds either. But the "no one touches my boat except me" types, well, I bet they get to do a lot of boating alone.

Re: Boat for rent, would you do it?

Just spoke with a guy that runs a bait/tackle shop and rents boats, aluminum fishing types and a pontoon or two. He rented out a fishing boat on the 4th and it had to get towed in after the operator ran aground and literally "tore off" the lower unit. His comment (made me think); "Most people that are renting our boats have no experience driving them".

No way I'd let anyone use my boat without me in it.

And I take people with me all the time.

HA HA HA HA!!!
Can I put that on a T-Shirt? I don't have a wife or a daughter but the order would be the same I think... except my guns would be below the daughter!

Re: Boat for rent, would you do it?

Not me no way

My Truck- NO
My Guns-HE** NO
My Wife-YOUR ABOUT TO OPEN A CAN OF WHOOP BUTT
My Dog-NO
My Chain Saw-Maybe
My Boat-See My Guns
My Daughter-YOUR GONNA DIE
My Harley-See my Daughter

Having said that my Best Friend, all he has to do is ask, he has borrowed my Harley, Truck, Guns and Chain Saw, and in every single instance the things he has borrowed have come back in better condition then when he picked them up, and I return the favor. He is my Brother not by blood but by choice, and we do everything together. We have helped each other through divorce and family death, anything I own is his and vise versa.

Anybody with any sense would answer "no way" to this.

The liability and insurance issues could be huge if anything went wrong, up to and including criminal charges being filed against the owner who rented out the boat. I can almost guarantee you that most insurance policies will specifically exclude from coverage any damages or liability incurred if the boat is rented out.

It's absolutely horrifying to think of the world of sh!t you'd find yourself in if you rented someone a boat and then they hit a dock and killed someone. All fingers would be pointed at you as the guilty party, both criminally and in civil court you'd be raked over the coals for a decade or more.

Nope never and any true friend knows better than to ask such a silly ? That's why in 30 years of boating it has never happened. Anyone who knows enough about boats knows that's a stupid idea to begin with!
