This subject says it all. I've got my old 1972 Johnson 50 hp 50 anniversary engine running and shifting into gear great on Ear Muffs. As soon as it goes into gear in water it stalls out.

Ideas? Is this a major issue?

Some trash in the carb or not adjusted properly.

Okay, thank you... is this a major repair if they have to rebuild the carb(s)?

Your situation is very common. Motors run on a stand with muffs, have no backpressure on the exhaust, nor is there any resistence agaunst the motor, because the prop doesn't have to move anywater.

You could have fuel problems or ignition problems. Your carbs could be out of adjustment, you could have some junk in them, yourt idle may be set improperly (and setting it on the muffs could be the problem) or you may not be getting fuel to one cylinder.

You could also have a cylinder that is not firing. An easy way to check this is to use an inductive timing light on each sparkplug wire and/or a spark checker.

Running an engine on the muffs, doesn't tell you the overall status of your motor.

One thing you may want to check is the mechanical timing advacne on the magneto that hooks into the throttle remote. I have been battled mine for a while now. I had similar syptoms with an easy fix.
