Ok, heres the scoop. My buddy just picked up an 'old' boat for basically a song and a dance. Its an older 18' fiberglass (we arent sure even what the thing is, possibly an old starcraft, its a bowrider) and its got a godawefully overpowered 200hp HPDI yami outboard on it.

This boat, at anything more than an idle will list off to the starboard side pretty bad (so bad that we actually almost swamped the boat today!). First off, i tried going for a ride by myself and even steering the boat while sitting on the port side the boat would list to the starboard BADLY.

I quickly said f-that! and went back to shore and loaded up a few of the guys to see what it would do with some weight in it... It took 3 guys (appx 450-500lbs of weight) sitting on the port side and me sitting in the 'middle' of the boat to get this thing to fly straight! (even then it still wasnt perfect).

Anyways, it got 2 small fuel tanks under the seats at the bow (we only filled the one on the port side) and the battery is still in the stern on the port side. Other than that, no gear in the boat other than the flat of beer shoved under the seat on the port side.

Not sure what the heck would be causing it to do this so badly, if anything i would have thought the torque from that big ol engine would cause the boat to list to the port side!

Hes got the boat out of the water now and im going to check the hull for a 'hook' on the port side. thats about the only thing i could think thats causing the problem...

(oh, and we did try throwing a hydrofoil on it, didnt help at all)

Re: boat has got a nasty list to the starboard side...

hi dave....welcome to i boats....

on top of the prop....there is a long plate called an anti cavitation plate.....in the end of this plate...there is an annode....its made of zinc.

this can have a fin on it....this fin is used to counter the rotation of the prop....if its turned the wrong way...it will cause that list you are talking about....as the fin acts like a rudder.

check that this tab is in the correct position....and try to adjust it.....

if you look at the anti cav plate...and see a flat round metal thingy with no fin.....go get a annode with a fin on it...and adjust it accordingly....however...make sure that the annode does not interfere with the rotation of the prop.

it is really unusual for a boat to have a hook in one side of a hull unless someone really screwed up in a restoration.

hope that helps
cheers

I had an old 16' bow rider that had a similar list and after looking at evrything under the sun, we discovered the outboard engine was mounted on an angle. As soon as this was corrected he boat run perfectly.

I can understand the list problem in general, because the motor is way too powerful for the boat. So, what might cause it to list in the "wrong" direction?

This may sound silly, but maybe, just maybe, the previous owner got a great deal on a counter-rotating engine someplace?

forgot to mention.... we have tried adjusting the anode with no luck :(

The engine does not appear to be mounted at any kind of angle, if it is, its not very far off being perfectly verticle!

The engine is standard rotation

I dont see it being an issue with 'too much power', the boat acts up pretty much any time it is moving, including part throttle. God forbid you ever actually open up that engine, it would probably tear that old boat in half...

Check the motor fo the right height. The trim tab should be turned to the right if it pulls to the right. Good luck

I have been fighting the same thing in my 16' starcraft. I'm to the point of thinking its a wet foam issue of great proportion. As mine will get to 23 MPH with 4 people and then flop over on the starboard side also. with 2 and both paying attention i can get to 30 MPH, but its not to fun, as when it flops there is no coming back, just have to back off all the way and fast.
Im going to tear out the floor this winter and replace the foam, and what ever else needing be.
at the dock with one person in it, does it list to one side?
I can sit one the starboard side with the tank (12 gals) full and the boat is level as can be. if i move to the port side it will list badly. so no solo trips for me till next year.
