Boat history report?

Hey guys I bought a boat off someone that had it registered in TN and he lived in KY from which TN doesnt make you title a boat for registration. Long story short I got the boat from him thinking all I had to do is go to WV DMV and apply for a title since I was told that they wasnt one for it. But after 5 weeks of the paper being gone the DMV called and said that there is a KY title issued to the boat and I would have to have that to get the boat titled in WV. The guy I bought it off of said he will check to make sure that he didnt title it and if so he didnt remember doing so. Guess what he didnt and now hes not sure how to go about finding who has the title since its been over 10-12 years since he had it.

Main question about the rant is, can I do a carfax report on the Hull number and find out who the last registered name on the title belongs to? (Never used carfax before) Maybe I can call them and offer a few bucks for them to locate a title so I can get this done.

No. A boat history report (not carfax- that's just for cars) will not tell you this. My 1999 Chris* Craft had at least 2 owners before me, and I made the mistake of ordering a boat history report. For whatever I paid (don't remember), it told me that the boat was a 1999 Chris*Craft manufactured by Chris*Craft on such-and-such date in 1999. Period.

Do you have a bill of sale?

I would start by calling the guy you got it from then the KY DMV I hope he had a bill of sale of you could be in possession of stolen property

I doubt the boat history can tell you anymore info so save your money ther

Thats what I was afraid of. Hate to pay the big bucks for something thats not going to help me find who it is titled to. KY offers a title history check for 3 bucks but I cant make heads or tails out of how to fill the dang thing out.

Bill of sale in hand or should I say at the WV DMV now. I wouldnt think it was stolen since he had it registered in TN with current registration.
