Boat Hull Stains Easily

My Bayliner runabout (white) is always getting stained, mostly when I boat in brownish or muddy water. These stains are easily removed by using oxalic acid but they keep reoccurring. It doesn't seem to matter whether the hull is waxed with quality wax, the stains just keep coming back. Perhaps Bayliner just has lousy porous gel coat?

Have you tried wetsanding a test spot? Then wax as normal. The gelcoat may be a bit porous, letting the gunk settle in. Brackish water is hard to stop from staining. At least its worth a try.

I struggled with this problem for years.
A lesson I learned from boating the Chesapeake: wipe down the hull sides as soon as it’s on the trailer. No soap or chemicals needed! I use an old beach towel or big sponge.

All of my boats have done that. It's not a function of Bayliner. As mentioned above, wipe it off once you have it on the trailer with a towel/rag/etc. Some launches are including wash down facilities to help prevent the spread of invasive species so I'd check to see if your launch has that and if so...use it.

Depends on the cause of the stains. If it’s just dirty water hosing it off before it dries will help.

If it’s tannic acid like we get, it’s not coming off without chemicals.

I keep a garden spray full of 25/75 dilution of Atwood biodegradable hull cleaner and water. Takes all of 5 minutes to spray down and rinse.

We always wipe down as soon as the boat is on the trailer and out of the way of others trying to launch. Wiping down with damp rags immediately makes a huge difference and requires a lot less energy and time than trying to clean it after it has dried.

Wet sand, cut, and polish...followed by wax. Then it shouldn't stain as easily and the stains you do get should wipe off much easier.
