I picked up my new (used) boat last week from down in Raleigh, NC, trailered her home through downtown Richmond, VA in rush hour traffic. Happy to have her home. Taking her out for the first time next week.

I purchased boat insurance through GEICO before I picked her up:$7500 coverage for boat/outboard, $1200 for trailer. My yearly premium is $236. However, when I get the paperwork in the mail, it says coverage excludes the saltwater from Fernadina Beach, FL to Brownsville, TX. Tat eliminates all of Florida and the rest of the Gulf of Mexico.

I don't plan on being that far south this year, but at some point I will. Does anybody else think this is unusual?

Thoughts?

Re: Boat Insurance

investigate Farmers insurance. we saved a ton of $$$. have switched everything from Geico to Farmers. ad the salt water rider when you get ready to go to the salt.

Re: Boat Insurance

I use Farmers as well (well, Foremost is their boat insurance...they own it). I pay $291/yr with $25k coverage on the boat and $300k liability. I agree with tashasdaddy...don't add the rider until you need it. Why pay for it when you don't plan to hit the salt.

Does anyone use BoatUS insurance? We have the tow and trailer assist membership with them but were wondering about the insurance they offer.

Re: Boat Insurance

We just went to BoatUS and they cut our previous policy price in half. We have used them for our tow service for a few years and they solicited us..checked them out and cancelled my existing Progressive policy and went with them. Coverage was even better, as boatus offers trailer towing as well for a slight increase.
Our Boat is insured for $22k, personal items, $3k, trailer towing and the policy is $420....

I am using BoatUS. I would have went with Allstate, who I have many other policies with, but they don't cover boats over 30 years old.

Re: Boat Insurance

I would check around, I thought Geico was one of the highest, Plus where i live ,if i go to saltwater i'll probably rent or charter, Allstate used to be cheaper, but with my other policies, multi discount works out
