I have had boat insurance for 10 years on my first boat without question. I just bought a new one and when calling to get insurance, I just put it in my name. My wife has probably driven four to five times in the last 10 years. They said she would not be covered driving if she was not on the policy. I thought anyone driving should be covered. I added her as it was a $30 difference, but leads to question whether others are covered while driving if I am not on the boat. They did say any drivers in the household needed to be on the policy, but I do lend my boat to my dad, who is an experienced boater, from time to time, and want to make sure it is covered when I do.

Interesting. My policy is with Farmer's (Foremost for boats) and my agent, who has never steered me wrong, told me other drivers would be covered.

READ the policy! It will tell you who is covered and who is not. Don't take an agents say so.

Re: Boat Insurance

My boat is insured under my homeowners policy. So the boat is covered not the individual driver, the same way it doesnt matter who is driving my car. I just got done shopping my insurance and asked some of these questions. Btw, I have West Bend Mutual Ins.

Most homeowners insurances cover only boats with minimal HP and the liability is on the low side as well. Also, machinery damage (damage to the boat itself) may be nonexistant.

I have 4 boats and only 1 is covered. The other 3 require separate policies because they are either too valuable to get damaged, or have bigger motors.

Best to chek the fine print on your policy.

I tried to add my boat underneath my umbrella policy, but they told me it required a seperate policy as well. I called my insurance company and was told it will ensure others who borrow my boat, but only if they use the boat less than 12 times per year. They had a word for what kind of user they consider this, but forgot what it is. If they use more than 12 times per year, they are required to be on the policy. Any household members who would drive the boat were required to be on the policy.

I echo this. Read the policy, if it does indeed state that only the named policy holder is insured, I think it would be time to look for a new insurance company. If it does not say that, I think it is time to find a new insurance agent.

I did once I got the paperwork, and it proved him right as usual. He's good to me. Good advice though. Trust but verify!
