I am conserned that if my boat should happen to sink and the Coast Guard makes me raise it , that the cost would be more than I can handle.

So I am wondering where do you guys buy your boat insurance at ? years ago I had a rider on my home owners policy to cover a boat but I am no longer with that carrier.

I am not conserned with the boat itself because I only have $800. into it, just the cost of raising it if something goes wrong...

Also have any of you guys had to deal with raising a boat from the bottom ? if so what it cost ?

Re: Boat Insurance ?

We have Progressive and so far are happy with them. Of course, all they've done so far is take our money. We haven't had a claim with them for anything. By the way, I think we pay $20 a month for ful coverage that includes towing, hitting a submerged object, lifting the boat out of the water if it's sunk, and for environmental damage.

Although the value or replacement cost of your boat is important, even more important is if you were to have an accident (God forbid). Towing fees can run well over a grand and if anyone were to be hurt on your boat or by your actions....get some insurance. It's really not that expensive for the basic kind.

Progressive. When a wheel bearing went south on my trailer  the flat bed towing cost went over my AAA coverage. Progressive picked up the difference no questions asked.
Easy to do on line also.;)

Ever see Fast Times At Ridgemont High? It's a movie from 1982. Spicoli was the stoner, surfer that was a moron & Mr. Hand was his English teacher. It was a bit of a political message that if I explain I imagine the post will get closed and some people will get pissed.

Re: Boat Insurance ?

I use state farm, which is where i have my home/auto/boat/some of my life insurance.
I have a replacement cost that chose on the boat, and all the other coverage.
Towing insurance is covered via my vehicle because I pay towing insurance and it covers trailers.
I had a boat motor stolen out of my pickup in 2001, I had insurance on my boat/motor (14' car top, on the boat rack, motor in the back locked in a canopy and chained). I called state farm and they where willing to send me a check that night for what it would have cost to order a motor from cabelas. I told them wait until I price one locally which I saved them a few hundred dollars. Got a check right away with no questions asked. So far that is my only boat claim and would love to keep it that way.

Re: Boat Insurance ?

Guys,
One thing you are missing here in your discussion is Liability / Bodily Injury Coverage on your boat. If for instance you hit a submerged object or run into the shore at night at cruising speed, and your passengers get thrown out or banged against hard surfaces....you will wish you had Liability when your best friend's lawyer sends you greetings and copies of the hospital bills.

As an insurance agent, a number of companies will provide boat policies with Liability Coverage just like your car...

Check with your agent...and if not check online....but make sure your policy has enough Liability / Bodily Injury Coverage....

Got My 21 foot Starcraft covered with $300,000 Liability and $5000 in hull coverage for $130 a year....
