Re: boat magazines

The only mag I take is Water ski and it isn't so much a boat mag as a water sport mag. I use to use Overtons alot but I have found that the prices and selection is better here, than there. You can find tie downs in alot of places, here or even a super walmart that has a good marine dept., as some are better than others. wh

Re: boat magazines

I got a good set of tie downs at Walmart. No shipping and probably a little cheaper than online stores.

Re: boat magazines

Trailer boats is the one I subscribe to. I am debating on renewal though. They have started writing about only high end, large boats it seems.

Re: boat magazines

Trailer Boats for me. It is the only one that continually discusses issues that are relevant to small boaters.

Twidget,

They get accused of that every year. The last edition was indeed a large boat focus, but that's what it said on the cover. Plenty of 18 - 20 footers reviewed as well IMHO. Stick with them, good advice there.

Well when I think about it, you can actually get more specific and quicker info here . . . Hmmmmm.

Re: boat magazines

I subscribed to Trailer Boating when it first came out. Their articles and tests seemed fairly objective. As time went on the magazine got thinner with less content and more advertising. You need to realize that all these magazines are out to make a profit. So lets say that engine manufacturer "X" introduces new technology and is also a major advertiser. Do you think that Trailer Boating will provide an objective review if their new engines are a real turkey. Me thinks not.

Re: boat magazines

I subscribe to Boating Magazine, a little heavy on large boats, but the regular columns and info is pretty good. I like its somewhat light hearted content, the boats tests are good...

Re: boat magazines

I too have a subscription to Trailer Boats. It's an okay mag, about the closest I can get to what I want, although I have been tempted to try out Bass & Walleye Boats. Too bad there isn't a magazine that caters more to those of us that work on boats, sort of a magazine version of Shipshape TV. I don't care much for reading about a $70,000 express cruiser, but I can read about $20,000 center consoles all day long....

Re: boat magazines

I find it strange that there aren't more US & UK magazines aimed towards the average boater - with boats in the 16-32' range. Most local boating magazines over here in Scandinavia (i.e. Båtmagasinet , Bådmagasinet , Båtliv (SE) , Båtliv (NO) , Vi Menn Båt , Vi Båtägare , Båtnytt , etc.) are focused on that part of the market - with lots of practical advise, smaller boat tests and reviews, and just the occasional glimpse of more luxurious yachts.

Offshore, Saltwater Sportsman, Soundings, Motor Boating, and Fisherman, my daughter comes home from school selling magazines once a year! I also get Yachting which was provided free for one year at a boat show... talk about out of my league!

Re: boat magazines

trailer boats & boating for me. i like trailer boats cause they review smaller boats and have a "truck" test every month. not to mention the yearly engine guide and the prop guide. sorry stevens! boating also reviews smaller boats, and hey, I love to read about $200k to $2mil boats too! I would get hotboat too, but the wife already complains about how much reading material I have! Boating Life isn't bad either, WalMart carries it, so i read it there!

As for tie downs, support this site AND get the best tie down available -- one that stays on your trailer. I have them and love them:

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...y=imco&**********=639322752&*******=653773715

Re: boat magazines

i read a LOT and its rare to ever see and MAG really get into the problems a boat has

it like boattest.com all the boats get great reviews the most they might say is the engine is hard to get to

which means service is going to be very hard and cost a lot more money than a better layed out boat but they will never point this out

tommays

Re: boat magazines

I no longer get any boating mag, though I get lots of other mags (around 20), I I agree with others, they mostly cover super high end yachts I could never afforsd and so have no relevance for me, the content is to low for all the hype ads and the information offered is just more of the same. There is much more to be learned here on sights like this.

Re: boat magazines

I get Trailer Boats, Boating, Salt Water, & Sport Fishing, though all of them seem to forget the smaller boaters. But at least they cure my winter blues, 'til I can get the boat back in the water. Joe

Re: boat magazines

I pick up a copy of Trailer Boats from time to time, but would agree with others that the forums on this sight provide more useful information.
As for online stores, try BoatersWorld.com
Large selection and good prices.
Walmart has some basic stuff, so does Academy Sports.

You will love them. They are a little pricey, but anytime I can save a trip from the back of the boat to the truck twice per outing gets my approval.

Re: boat magazines

Since I'm not in the market for a new boat, I don't subscribe to any magazines. However, even if I were looking for a boat, I think I'd start right here for information. I can ask questions and get a variety of answers. (Try that with a magazine!) I like the interaction and the people here. Just reading the forums here leaves little time for a mag.

Dan
