Re: Boat makes wide turns.

Today I pulled stuffing box out and here is the pictures,I'm not sure if this have to be bent like this or is damage?
On one picture you can see a small crack from one side which is front side, that probably happened when the truck was pulling trailer out of the water and boat was sitting to low and rudder was scraping on the floor.

But my concern is. Before I pulled boat out of the water didn't maneuver like it should, but all this bent parts happened on the ramp when was pulled out, so if I replace all bad parts (shaft, stuffing box) I will be on the same place like before. Unless it was bent before, because I didn't see how was looking before.
Is there anything else that could make boat not turning like it should at low speed ?
On higher speed turns good didn't notice anything wrong.

Thanks

The boat would steer MUCH better with the rudder just behind the prop where it belongs.... as for what parts are or are not bad... you need an expert to put hands on.... or just replace everything

How can I put rudder closer to prop when this set up is design originally like this?
Does this box looks damaged to you? I was looking to buy new one but looks same like mine, with an angle.

Re: Boat makes wide turns.

If you were 20 miles away I'd come look at it but Without having had that exact boat how could anyone say from pics.... It ALL looks beat up but what really matters is how is it supposed to look.... I suspect that the shaft is bent along with the stuffing box but maybe the stuffing box was installed wrong.... either way with the crack it has obviously got some damage and needs replaced.....
The pics you posted had the rudder shaft pointed to the rear at an angle.... that does not look at all right to me....

I keep telling you to get someone to look at it first hand for a reason.... you could spend quite a bit on parts and be just guessing or for maybe $75 you could know for sure what you need..... The tech could also notice things that you don't even think to look at.

OH, I don't know, ... I'm beginning to wonder if your strut & prop shaft may have been swapped out (in addition to the rudder). Your strut just doesn't look 'right' to me. I'm thinking that Luhrs struts have always had a lot more rake to them, which would also put the prop a lot closer to the rudder. I found this picture on line, and though it is a twin screw boat (also a 1988 Luhrs) I'm thinking it is much more in line with what yours should look like.

Thanks for help
I'm trying to find any specs with previous owner he apparently have some, because cant find online picture or any specs of same boat like mine.
I know some work was done under but who did it and how supposed to be I am not sure that is my first problem.
People recommend call someone but not sure that these local mechanics will know much, just because boat is rare and no specs.Mostly will be guessing.
I already made new shaft in machine shop because old was bent, but for stuffing box not sure if it has to be under the angle like you can see on the picture above,or has to be straight down 90 degree.

It's an inboard. Find an old salt with some inboard experience to take a look at it. In 5 minutes He will tell you what it needs. I have 3 now. Just sold a 42 with twins. I have had the 28 from 1980. Done the struts shafts and rudder work for decades. All work the same way.

Re: Boat makes wide turns.

Hi
Here is few pictures how I think it supposed to look like. I know it's not same look at the picture and in person but you can see huge difference before and after. It's not all tide yet and rudder has to go all way up
This set up is with new shaft because old was bent and same stuffing box.
I think stuff box was installed wrong before because it was leaning way to far backwards.

Thanks

Re: Boat makes wide turns.

Hello
I still working on my boat it take me much longer then i planed but almost there dont have much time to work on the boat because of my job.
Bottom is completly sand down and new primer and paint applied,do some electrical work and now still playing with rudder.
After all is being assembeld look like problem besides of being bent was in rudder angle. To me angle of rudder is to small looks like it should turn more in each side. Like you can see in pictures is not enough.
Was reading it should be 40-45 degree and mine is more like 20-25 degree
Trying to figure this out here is few pics. That is as far is it goes
Thanks
