Hi dadsfavorit2,

What hp is this engine? My 1957 7.5hp has a glass bowl under the carburetor. If yours has this does it run dry?

The glass bowl Outrage mentions acts like a fuel filter to stop sediment/water from entering the carb.Take a look at this.If it is full of gunk(not fuel),take it off and clean out.Try again.

Re: boat motor boggs andstalls out and starts right back up

Dads favorite, Couple ideas. I have a '57 7.5 also. The high speed idle adjustment on that also affects the low speed. When the motor is started, run the motor and adjust the high speed until the motor runs the best, then slow down and adjust the low speed. Make sure they have enough friction so they don't move with the engine vibrating. There is a packing nut to tighten up if they turn too easily. The original float in that carb is cork that is covered with varnish. The new additives in the gasoline eat away at the varnish. It may not be working up to snuff. Make sure the gas and air lines are in good shape with no cracks or air leaks. You said that the tank is staying pumped up. When you loosen the gas cap, there should be a lot of air escaping after you run the motor. If not then there is a leak either in the hoses or the o-rings on the connector. Check the coils for cracks. The original coils have a tendancy to crack. When they heat up, they can ground out which would stop the engine. when they cool a little, they could shrink and work again until hotter. If you pull the recoil start off that, there is a plate on top of the flywheel. Take the screws out and look through the point adjusting hole to see if there are any cracks in the coils. This is a rudimentary check, but my crask were easy to see. I you need to replace the coils, I would get a manual at the Ken cook site, or an aftermarket manual at Amazon, a bookstore, e-bay, or local library. You will need a puller to get the flywheel off. Some have suggested using a harmonic balancer puller available cheap at a auto repair store. I know I have not narrowed it down very much. The easiest thing is to adjust the high and low speed adjustments, but from your description, I suspect something is grounding out the spark because it start up right away again. I have had this same problem on a car, and a lawnmower. Points gap should be .020, plugs gapped at .030. check plug wires for arcing. I have the original owners manual scanned in which I would be happy to send to you. It is 1.6 MB

My 50 Merc did that twice; first time it was the inline fuel filter (clogged), then an air leak in the fuel line.
-Randy
