I'm trying to drop the lower unit and don't know where to detach the shift linkage. As you can see I am a boat motor novice, but I have always found a way to do it myself with the help of others. Thanks for any info. Mercury Ser#1680135

What size motor, do you have a manual, what have you done so far?

Re: Boat motor novice in need of help removing shift linkage to drop lower unit.

It's a 6hp twin. I've got the lower unit dropped about an inch and it's getting caught on the shift linkage. A gentleman told me to find a 7/16's nut up top and remove that. Which I found the nut but it's very hard to even get a wrench on it. I did notice a grub screw on the shift linkage down by the lower unit. I'm worried about the nut up top because of the gears. I know once I take off the nut that the gears will clank all over the place. Is there an easier way to remove the linkage? And no I don't have a manual unfortunately.
