Re: Boat Names

Usually, the show-stopper is going to be the vessel weight. I think it was something like 5 or 8-tons minimum. The weight is NOT the actual vessel weight, but rather a required calculation. That USCG website snapperbait referred you to has a link to a ‘simplified weight calculation’. If you go there you can plug in all the measurements and in the upper right corner it will tell you if you qualify. Hint: the height of your vessel is NOT the draft. It is measured from the bottom of the keel to the top of the freeboard. If you qualify you will be privileged to pay a $133 application fee. You must include the original bill of sale and you must pay an additional $8/page to have the USCG look at the bill of sale. In turn, they will send you a hull ID number that must be permanently fixed to the boat, and they will register the name and hailing port you specified on the application as belonging to that hull ID. You must put the name and port in 4” letters (minimum) just about anywhere on the boat, for recreational registration. Usually, folks put the name/port on the stern.<br /><br />Just guessing, but I don’t think a 14” Polarcraft jon boat is going to get it. :)

Re: Boat Names

But anybody can slap whatever name on a boat that's already registered by a state. It just can't go on the bow in place of the number.

Re: Boat Names

Here in Ontario you register a small boat and get a registration number or you license a large boat and get a name. Jurisdiction is determined by the boat, gross weight I think.<br /><br />Regardless, I think names are pretty good too so we're naming our boat, the only proviso is we have to keep the registration number visible as well. Fine by me.<br /><br />Since you're thinking of naming your boat too I thought I'd pass on these simple rules to "test" your name with. I can't remember where I got them but they seem pretty good nonetheless.<br /><br />Will your boat name weather this storm? <br />1) The Explanation Test. How often do you want to explain what the name means?Bizarre Greek gods, in-jokes, and foreign words _usually_ fail this test.Names that are difficult to spell fall in this category. <br />2) The Non-cute Test. How sappy is the name? Puns, childhood nicknames, and in-jokes _usually_ fail this test. <br />3) The Brevity Test. "Brevity is the soul of wit" and the soul of boatnames. Imagine repeating your boat name 3 times, preceded by a "Mayday"(or is that "M'aidez", Pierre?). Still sound like a good name? <br />4) The Hubris Test. If you're racing, try not to pick names like "MagicBullet", "Blew By You" (see test 2), or "Clear Ahead", unless you feel you can live up to them. <br />5) The "Been There, Done That" Test. Don't name your boat after a type of wind (Zypher, Sirroco, Breeze), a mytho- historical boat (Dawn Treader, Ra, Spray) or an alcoholic beverage. Unless, of course, that's what the boat tells you her name is. <br />6) The Embarrassment Factor. Imagine explaining your boat's name to someone you don't like, and who doesn't like you. If grudging respect is not a possible outcome, you may wish to reconsider. <br />7) The Corruption Test. What will your 'friends' call your boat? e.g. White Hawk=White Cloud or Serenity=Senility. <br />8) The Omen test. Followed a boat cutely named 'Das Broke' out one day. He promptly drove over a submerged section of break wall at high speed and sank. <br />9) The radio Test. "Over and Out" would be a bad name. ... "This is Summertime calling Over and Out. Do you copy?" Huh?? <br />The above rules should be weighted by how much, if at all, you care about what others think of you and your boat.

Re: Boat Names

Wreck Rider, <br />Per rule #5 a friend named his boat "Been There, Done That". How does that fit in. :) It's in response to having any number of boats over the years & settling on a more modest boat this time around.

Re: Boat Names

Wreck Rider,<br /><br />I often use the Radio test. For instance,<br /><br />"Cruiser 'Sand Dollar, Sand Dollar, Sand Dollar', This is JAZZ calling Sand Dollar.....Over"<br /><br />Or I also use it if I am thinking of new names. <br /><br />My name definately failed the Hubris test. My name, JAZZ, has so much hubris that it is unbearable. If you can see the boat, You'll know what I mean.<br /><br />I think my name for the next boat (which will be my name for now on), will be either The Big Ragu', BeWitched, Xena, or Athena . It all has to do with the look, and handle of the boat.Thank you!<br /><br />JAZZ ;)

Re: Boat Names

Good luck..... I have been working on a name for my latest boat for the last year. It was named "Sunshine" by the previous owner but that doesnt work for me for some reason. The real issue is to come up with something unique. I got..... nothing so far. I still have all kinds of questions on the matter. Can you name a boat after someone who is still alive or is that some sort of maritime bad luck for the boat and/or the person you named it after? Can I name a boat after a man, say for instance my grandfather or are male names reserved only for ships? I mean "E.O. TROXLER" would look smashing on the stern of a cargo ship but what about an 18' open bow? Will it anger the gods of the sea if I change the name of the boat since it has already been christened? If so is there anyway to un-christen it so I may re-name it and motor along uncursed by Posiden? Are there rules about a name that may have a slighlty tawdry double meaning? What if I give it a good old stand-by name like "PETUNIA" and someone at the marina already has a boat with the same name? Is that some sort of social no-no? Good luck. (ya' know "PETUNIA" aint bad hmmm.......)

Re: Boat Names

Yes there is a christening, de-christening and re-christening process/ritual that should be followed, if you want to keep Poseidon/Neptune on your side. I've seen it before on this forum, involves repeating a script and then of course some tasty beverages to follow.

My GF and I were thinking something like "Money Pit" would be appropriate.

Re: Boat Names

Could not think up a name for ours, then realized we had been calling it by it's name all along.

So when people ask on Monday what I did over the weekend, I just tell 'em we took OUR BOAT out.....
