:confused:I?m new to boating and just bought a new boat. I took it out fishing and the over heat buzzer went off while trying to troll. I was taking it out of gear when I got going to fast and putting it back in to troll around some more. It ran fine while at higher RPM. I was just wondering if I have a real mechanical problem or operator error? The boat is a 16? aluminum hull with 1987 30hp Johnson.

Thanks for the help in advance.

No real mechanical problem as that is what the buzzer is for. It is time to replace the water pump and check the thermostat as part of "new owner" maintenance.

I just checked to water pump tonight impeller/pump and it looked great. Not sure what to look for with the thermostat?

Thanks again for the help!

Re: Boat over heating at low RPM.

when ever i buy a used motor. the first things, i do is change the impeller, they can look good, BUT. also at that age change the Thermostat and poppet valve. just because the motor has a good taletell (pee stream) does not mean the thermostat is working. it is just an indicator, that the impeller is pumping water. the tstat, is in the water jacket on the back of the cylinder head.

go here look up you motor, http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

cylinder/crankcase diagram, you will need Part #s 60,19,20,57 in the diagram.

also look at the gearcase diagram. i would replace the at least the impeller. if not a water pump kit.

this is insurance, that you have a good boating experience, rather than a really espensive trip.
