I am looking at buying a 1977 CEE BEE Avenger Mach II. It's a 17' low profile ski/runabout. These boats are/were popular in California "back in the day." I'm looking to put my 1987 I6 Merc. 115 on it. I'm hoping someone out there is familiar with these boats and can answer this question: With a stripped down load, motor fully trimmed running a Mercury Laser II what kind of top speed can I expect with this boat?

Thanks for the reply, Bond-O. So, if I instead went with a Suzuki 2S DT-140 could I expect speeds to 55?

Re: Boat Performance Q

I hate to dig up such an old post, BUT... This boat is now completely restored. I've had it out 3 times now. It's rigged with an '87 Merc I6 115. My 50 mph speedo buries itself at full speed. Given the prop pitch and and rpm (and the feel of the boat) I doubted highly that the boat was reaching the speeds the speedo indicated. I had it out today with someone who had a gps. It wasn't a good day to be speed checking. The water was filled with boat chop, I had a full tank of gas, and had a passenger "manning" the hand-held gps. In those conditions the best speed we could squeeze out of this thing was 52.9 mph. Therefore, I conclude on a smooth lake, with no passenger, and stripped down load, I could come close to 55.

studly - Pics are below.

deejaycee - Uh, I hate to point this out, but you said the boat would do 55 with a 140 Suzuki FI 2s. Read the thread. Hehe. = ) With that engine I'd expect speeds nearing or exceeding 60. BTW, this boat is a handfull at 53 in rough water.

I'd say ya need someone with a quick boat, with a bunch of props to test. Looks good. Somewhere middle 50's is looking good with a 115. BUT, WHAT THE TACH SAY, AND WHAT PROP? A 2 blade SS around 13x20/22 should be tits..13/19 3 blade will have a good holeshot (135 16 foot Flatty myself). Yank the weight, pop the motor up with a 1" --1 1/2" board under the clamp..get it out of the water more. post a pic from the back out of the water

Scaaty,
Thanks for the post. Motor is mounted up about 1 1/2". Since the mounting bolts are all sealed up with 3M 4000 marine sealant, etc., not planning on putting it up any higher. A bunch of props to test... hmmm. That would be fun! Right now I'm running a 14x22 Mercury Laser II. At full trim and top speed it is turning about 5700 rpm.
