Re: boat plug idea

Guy that I dive with has a procedure for cleaning his boat like that. On trip back to marina..has 2 buckets of water at front of deck...while on plane...remove 2 pvc threaded caps from thru transom pipes....dumps water in front...lets it drain off back...close pipes back up...presto clean deck.

-JustMrWill

Attach the plug to a transom tie-down strap, if you forget about those (which I never have but I've seen it done) at least the boat won't leave the trailer.

Re: boat plug idea

I keep my boat keys on one of those "floating" keychains that looks like a nun buoy. (You know...the bottom is white, and the top is a red cone?) The top comes off, and I store the boat plug inside the keychain. When it's in there, the keys are heavy and awkward. When I'm gathering everything at the house and grab the keys, it reminds me, so I put it in then, before I tow it to the lake. has worked well for me.

We (my friends and I) used to run around in a john boat while it was raining (trying to catch fish)... the boat would get pretty full, and we would pull the plug and hit the gas. Worked like a dream...no bilge needed.
Mark

richard- Ive seen my dad do that more than once. we pulled the boat too far up on shore once and water poured in the back overnight.....and another time when the lower unit got stuck in the bottom at the dock and again water filled the boat at night. bailed until we could get on plane safely then pulled the plug

As I've been reading thru these ideas, the tie down idea came to mind. Then I got to your post jt. It is definitely the best IMHO.

The winch crank wouldn't work for me as I do not unhook the bow cable till I'm in the water.

However, all that being said, after 32 years of boating I have never forgotten a plug. Now after reading all these post, since coming to iboats, I fear my time is coming. Especially after my resto.

So, to the transom tie down it is for me. I'll get one of those small climbing rope do dads to attach it with.

What's the problem with remembering the plug? I've launched my new boat three times and have remembered the plug every time, so far. :D

That's how I have mine set up.That way it's always with the boat. :)

Re: boat plug idea

jtex and others, I launched my boat about a week ago and actually put in the pulls but somehow forgot the straps, they are/were originals (14 years) and after really slamming the brakes to get the boat off they apparently broke. Now How dumb is that.

Forgetting plug is easy enough fix, how about forgetting the KEYS.

txswinner, I'd say you were lucky they broke while the boat was in the water not on the freeway! What'd you do for the trip home?

BTW, my spare boat keys reside permanently in my truck.

Never forgot the plug, but have forgot the keys one time. And it just so happened that we went to a lake about 60 miles from home that time. Drove back home just to get keys and then back. Couple hours wasted, but still got to go boating. ;)

Sounds like a great way to test the ole "prop vs small chain" debate, to find the winner.

Re: boat plug idea

A small rubber flap installed over the outside of the hole will slow down the water rushing in, giving you time to remember that you forgot to put the plug in before the boat sinks, but still allow water to drain out...maybe...well...probobly not...just an idea...somebody try it and let me know if it works.

Added later........
As you can tell, I sometimes post my ideas and read the other posts afterwards. I see now that scottnjay already thought of this....so, anyway, does it work? How about some kind of pre-boating checklist? That might work too, or a chain.

Got a free ket chain at a boat show. The one that twists open to keep your stuff dry. I keep my plug in it when the boat is out of the water. The weight of the plug reminds me to use it.
Dead eye

Re: boat plug idea

It's easier just to get a self draining cockpit and don't worry about the plug. :D
