This may go somewhat hand in hand with the "Ebay" thread, but can any of you relate some of your experiences in buying and selling used boats - horsetrading if you will - and is it a viable way to make a little money on the side while doing something you enjoy?

Re: boat sales

Like anything else, if you can get them cheap enough, and sell them high enough, you will make money.

Re: boat sales

That is how I worked my way from a 11' wooden sailboat to a 23' CC. Buy low, splash some paint around & sell at a profit. Oh - - wouldn't give up my day job though.

Oh - - wouldn't give up my day job though.

Buying and selling is for the most very seasonal and location dependent. For example if you are in the northeast in April and have a half dozen modestly priced used boats that look good you can sell them all in a fairly short period of time and be looking for more to work on. Put one boat on the market in October and it might sit by the house all winter.

I had a deal worked out when I lived in Virginia (1972-4) for a friend in Miami to buy a boat there and meet me in Atlanta. I would take it home, do the fix up and sell it. I thought we could turn 2-3 boats per year and split the profits. We did a couple but the oil crisis of the 70s came upon us and no one was buying anything that burned gas. I returned to Miami before the market opened up again.

I think the concept would work now but would limit it to older low cost/price rigs.
