Re: Boat Sealant Question
What is the difference between 3M 5200 and 3M 4200?? I found the 5200 for $16 for 2 tubes. Will there be a problem with sealing the boat with pop rivets and then finishing up with 5200? If so then what is the problem with it? separation? strength? longevity?
Thanks for everything
That's probably was it was originally sealed with at the factory.
5200 is designed to never be removed. It'll seal/adhere, and then some. If you try to pull it off, the fiberglass/wood/whatever it's attached to will almost always fail before the 5200 will.
4200 was designed as a less permanent variant of the 5200, with all the same good characteristics but an ability to be removed if needed.
Using either one, don't just patch what's there... separate the hull fully, clean up the joint, and re-attach. Neither one will work well if you don't clean out the old junk thoroughly.
