Re: boat seems to heavy?

Is the hull fiberglass with flotation? You might have some extra weight inside the hull from water.

A 48 should have a 14' boat moving right along. How is the engine mounted and on what trim setting? Where is the fuel tank? Is it a tiller steer of do you have controls up front?

Welcome to iboats. Post a picture of your set up.

Re: boat seems to heavy?

Im going to agree with bob that you probably have waterlogged foam under the deck. my new project boat had some exposed foam, i pulled out a 12x12x4" thick piece that weighed about 10 lbs!

How is your bildge area set up? Is your floor sealed off from the bildge area? drilling holes in the bottom of your boat wouldn't be my first starting point but its done. Some more info and pics would help. Your foam is probally soaked, its time to find out cut a small hole in your deck and push on the foam if water comes out you've found your problem.

Re: boat seems to heavy?

I wouldn't drill holes in the boat to try and drain the water either... no point, and you'll have to repair the holes later.

Short answer: There's no way to dry out the foam. Really. You have to remove it.

This is a fair amount of work, but it's not hard to do. Verify that wet foam is your problem by checking core samples in various locations - cut a small hole in the deck or whatever from above, then use a section of PVC pipe to take out a core and check for water.

If you've got to take out the foam, then you'll need to do it the obvious way, but folks here can offer suggestions on how to do it properly and minimize the repairs you'll have to do after it's out.

FYI, the USCG recommends re-installing the foam for floatation, but it's not a legal requirement unless you're a professional boat manufacturer.

Re: boat seems to heavy?

Shop vac out the foam? Not really... it's solid stuff, even when really wet. It might work for some of it, but you'll have to manually dig out the rest.

If you mean shop vac the water out, no, that won't work except for a little bit of the water near the top of the foam, or standing water in the boat.

There's really no way around this except to manually pull the foam out. Lots of folks here have done it....

Re: boat seems to heavy?

Well show us a picture or two and we will coach you through it. The rub rail insert must come out and the metal backing needs to be removed as a start

Re: boat seems to heavy?

Is that boat fiberglass or plastic? Nice boat and looks like it might not split........ What are the first three letters of the hull identification number?

The hull looks fairly new..... maybe there is a warranty? I would like to look the manufacturer up and ask a few questions such as construction method and what type of foam.

Is water still coming out? The shop vac might be the only method.

Now I would go the manufacturer rout first.

If you want to install a deck plate (screw in cover) I would go with a 6 to 8" one http://www.iboats.com/Deck_Plates/dm/*******.015314414--**********.589623620--view_id.373615 installed either in the deck in front of the outboard or in the back of the rear bench seat.

This would provide access to ????? foam and the inner hull.

How deep in the rear splashwell as compared to the outside of the hull?
