A 350 is a Chevy engine, every marinizer of gas engines uses them and has for years. So what are "They" saying about the Volvo 350?

Absolutely nothing wrong with a Volvo Penta 5.7. It is not an oddball in any way shape or form, a very common and serviceable engine and drive. It is a GM engine with Volvo engineered marine fittings, where a Mercruiser is the same GM engine with Mercruiser engineered marine fittings. That Volvo Penta duoprop drive is desirable as well. Switching to a Mercruiser 5.7 would make no sense, short run or long run.

You wasn't asking how to repair anything, so it was moved to the non repair forum.

With the DuoProp drive, you can't do much better with an 88 engine and drive setup.

the 350 long block from GM is used as the base for marinizers such as Mercruiser, Volvo-Penta, the late OMC, PMC, Crusader, and the hundreds of small Marine engine builders.

As Don stated, the '88 duo prop outdrive is fairly bullet proof.
