I have a early 70's 14ft Montgomery Ward aluminum medium v boat with a 60", width on the beam, and a rebuilt 15 1/2" Transom with 1" ash and a 3/4" oak kicker on the back, It does not have a plate on the boat for a rating on hp. It had a 9.5hp evinrude short that weighed 67lbs, I want to put a 20 hp 4 stroke short shaft on it and the weight is 100 to 120 lbs, Am I safe with that set up?

Re: Boat size/motor sizing

My 2000 14' klamath is rated for 20hp, but the transmon is pretty well built.
You can look up the beam on the klamath.
I would also check the hp rating on the smokercrafts.
Also the extra weight in the back will make it stern heavy. I would suggest placing the fuel tank in the bow. You will probably need to add length to your fuel line. I would judge weather the transom is well built on your boat to handle the extra weight and hp.

Re: Boat size/motor sizing

Welcome to iboats.

Yes a 20 hp should be okay on that boat. My 14' starcraft was rated for 20 hp and it had a slightly smaller beam.
