Boat slowed way down.....doh! Figured out! :)

Last year took boat to 7000' lake by Mammoth(CA.)to fish with buddies for a few days,. 2 stroke, carbed 40hp Merc OB,new prop., 17' aluminum, ran great before. Wondered why and replies were altitude, 3 guys weight, etc. I was only getting matbe 19 knots when I usually got 20 at sea level. Took me almost a year to figure this out.............oh boy......doh..........., forgot to loosen vent cap on 6 gal gas tank!!!! It was imploding from fuel pump suction!!!! Took it out few days ago to Delta(CA.) sea level and got 27 knots out of her w/ 2 guys!!!!! I felt so dumb!!!!!!!! Just had to share, Heinz

Nice easy fix! Gotta love those easy ones. Expesialy when you figure it out BEFORE the engine overhaul!

I've done that a couple times...suction was a little more powerful with my 150hp. Not nearly as dumb as forgetting the oil...

My vent cap will screw itself shut after about 2hours, always have to check it.

hi i had never had a boat before and i bought a boat that didnt run and spent some money to get it fixed took it to the lake after tuneup to motor it started fine but wouldnt go fast took it home and took it off my boat and bought another motor and never got around to the lake but that motor worked fine at idle in a 55 gal drum by spring i bought another boat that the man said was lake ready took that boat to lake backed it in and undid the winch couldnt get it off the boat tried 10 minutes just a pushing finally figured out i didnt untie the ropes holding the boat down it wouldnt go fast either well about 10 months later the day i was to sell it i found out about the vent on the gas tank both motors run fine now but i trashed the first motor but i did end up with 2 good boats<br />B.ring O.ut A.other T.housand get it

Vent caps are like boat plugs - "Those who have, and those who will" Done both.
