Boat speakers

I took a set of speakers off an old boat thats just been sitting in a marina (they let me take w/e i wanted) . well i wanted to see if they worked so i too the wires crimped the right terminals on the wires and tried it on the radio i have sitting in the garage.. that radio is a normal stereo for inside.. and i got nothing.. i was wondering if theres something about that radio that i can't use those speakers. or something of that idea... or are my speakers just shot?

If they have been exposed to the weather, the voice coils have probably been seized up for a long time.

Try another speaker to make sure the radio itself is functional.

Hook the pos and neg wire from the speaker to a 12v battery. If the speaker thumps when you connect the wires it should be functional. to what extent, who knows.

can use a wall socket too, although you've got to be a bit more careful of getting shocked. you'll here the 60hz current...
i woulda thought it would do damage until somebody showed me with headphones (the plug had been stripped)

You know I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination but I've wired a 480v machine or 2 and installed a couple of stereos in my day and kind of got a funny feeling when you posted that a person could test a speaker by plugging it into a wall socket so I punched "plugging speaker into wall" into youtube and watched 3 videos of speakers being plugged into the wall causing them to violently blow apart and in once case start on fire, the best of 3 videos I viewed.
