Boat stalled, later found oil in Bilge... help!

Hi everyone. I have a 2009 Bayliner 175 with a 3.0L Mercruiser Sterndrive. I was out on the water Friday night and the engine stalled out of nowhere. Didn't make any weird noises, just kind of lost power fairly quickly and stopped running. Haven't been able to get it started since. I then went and checked on it during the day on Saturday, and I found a lot of oil in the Bilge. Hard to say how much because there was definitely water in there too, but I checked my oil level on my dipstick and I was just below the operating level.

Worst case scenario with a non-running engine and oil loss would most likely be a cracked block or thrown rod based on my novice understanding. However, I have a couple of other ideas I want to get second thoughts on:

1. Timing chain. What are the odds that the timing chain broke and cracked the TC cover, letting oil out?

2. Oil Pressure Sending Unit. Would a faulty oil pressure sending unit (on a 2009 Mercruiser 3.0L) cause an engine to stall and then not fire back up?

I'm also wondering if I might have two independent issues. Based on the way the engine stalled, my first instinct was fuel pump. So it's possible there's just an oil leak somewhere as well. I'll also add in that when I attempt to start the boat now, it cranks like normal, and even almost fired up a couple times on Saturday. If the engine was damaged, I assume it would still start and run, just sound terribly. If the engine was destroyed, I assume the flywheel would be locked and nothing would happen when I turn the key.

Anyone have any advice/insights here? Thanks in advance--this is my first post here!

1 - not a chance, the 3.0 uses timing gears

2 - could be

most likely the front cover or oil pan has rusted thru

Scott Danforth thanks for letting me know. Based on what I described, do you think it sounds like a blown engine? I'll do a rebuild if I have to but would prefer not to..

Check to see if your getting spark. You can get an inline spark tester, or pull a plug out, with it connected to the wire still, hold the plug close but not touch the cast iron head and see if spark kpa.fr the plug to the head. It's easier with the inline spark tester but the 2nd way to check is free.

As S D Said about the timing cover. When the engine was painted and with the harmonic balancer mounted they never received 1 drop of paint under it and also the area where the metal is spot welded on the lower flange.
If you hurt the crankshaft it is no big deal to have it turned undersize and the machine shop will also supply you with the bearings. If a rod or a main bearing did not spin then you do not even have to pull the head.

I would take it as separate investigations. First, where's the leak? Get down and look closely. Use your camera on your phone to look at places you can't see.

Next, why no fire? Need two things, fuel and spark. Check both.
