I was not trying to discourage the OP in anyway shape or form. Far from it, I love to see people fixing their own stuff.

I just don't want to see anyone get hurt because they were not informed about potential dangers, or worse yet do something bad because they were provided with incorrect advice.

run it up on muffs to make sure the impeller pumps water out the water ports, probably no problem as it must have been in neutral to crank. ?

Wouldn't the impellar still spin if it was in neutral? Is 7-10 minutes of cranking without cooling water enough to damage the impellar?

The whole outdrive has to be removed on the Merc to get to the impeller, it is kinda heavy. I dont think 12 volts can kill you but they certantly can hurt you.
20 minutes for an impeller change is awesome. Is there access from the outside of the drive on the OMC's?

IF it's an Alpha 1 you only have to remove the lower unit, at least thats all I had to remove to change mine. Yeah, it's kinda heavy but I did the whole job myself without rupturing my spleen. Now, does that 20 minutes include removing lower unit, changing impeller, reinstalling drive and filling with gear oil? If you can do all that in 20 min...

Doubt that the starter,or the battery would last or actually crank for 7 minutes. but i imagine it would be at a slow speed and low temperature. so not much damage.

Ya they ran it and it is pumping good and was in neutral.
He said impeller should be fine but he could check it.

Not to hijack, just an FYI. On my 87 OMC i can change the raw water impeller in less than 10 minutes. Three bolts, take the plastic cover off the top of the upper unit. The housing is right there, Just three more bolts and the housing comes off. I've done it with the boat still in the water! I don't think they could make it any easier.

having the shop check is as much as having him change it, except for the 25 or so for the impeller and gasket, if he said its pumping go with it, a close system will protect the engine from rapid over heat. and you will see it on muffs if its not pumping.
