I have a 23? I/O bowrider. Is this boat too big for an electric trolling motor? I like to fish on the rivers around Moyock, NC and don?t like starting the engine just to move around the cove.
thanks for the advice.
Bigski is right...if you have the cash Minn Kota has a troller that will push you around. Bass boats are heavy 'glass hulls and usually have 225-300hp outboards hanging off the back and they use electric bow-mounts all the time.
I agree 100+ lbs may be required and they do run quite a bit. I'd look for a used one...maybe somebody selling one with a boat that would sell the troller separate?
You could get by with a smaller #thrust motor but it depends on how much moving you want to do and how fast you want to do it. The bass rigs use 24v and 36v setups to ensure they can troll all day if needed. My last fishing boat was about 2200 lbs fully loaded with guys and gear and the 12v 55# thrust was more than enough for a full day of fishing. One time we even trolled for 2 hours at 3 mph pulling 4 lines (two on planer boards) and I still had 25% battery. Your problem with finding a used unit is that you'll need a longer shafted one to reach the water when most trolling motors out there are 48" and 54". I would think you'd need a 60" for a 23' bowrider.
That trim tab Minn Kota is sweet As soon as I get a boat big enough to require trim tabs I will want that as well...not get...but want
The cavitation mount is a great way to go also. A wireless fob would be ultra convenient. My girlfriend's grandfather has one on his 17' Triumph and he loves it almost as much as his Minn Kota electric anchor winch
