boat trailor damage

at the front of my trailor where the hitch is located there is damage from where the old owner tryed to install the hitch .he has smashed in the 3x3 tubing to make it fit!!!i am installing a new one with a lock on it ,is there anyway to remove about 4 to 5 inchs from the front so the damage is not affecting my new hitch?or should i just hammer it back?

do i have to cut and reweld another piece on or can i just cut it off (concerned about clearence problams)

The question is how much of the tongue extends in front of the winch post. If it's long enough to avoid clearance problems, cutting off a few inches won't matter much. If it's close to the winch post, then you may not want to lose that few inches. You have to look at your individual setup and make a decision.

If you decide to cut off and weld on a replacement, use an insert. Most of that trailer square tubing is designed so that the next smaller size will telescope into the next larger size. Put the new section on over the telescoping inner tubing, then drill and bolt vertically through the assembly. Then weld.

Your welder will know what to do. But, if you have plenty of tongue, a few inches isn't going to make a lot of difference anyhow.

How about cutting it back and installing a swing-away tongue on it.
