Re: Boat turns right

Reset the trim tab in the direction of the stress or to starboard in your case - small increments.

Boat's don't track like land vehicles, You can't let go of the steering wheel, and track in a straight line. Some steering torgue can be over-come with a trim tab adjustment. Motor height, and prop's can also make a difference

I stand corrected, Commander.

In most instances, reset the trim tab in the direction of the stress or to starboard in your case - small increments.

This often occurs after the lower unit has been serviced, because the trim tab was not set to the former location.

Re: Boat turns right

It should not "Turn Sharply" to the right. Wander to the right would be more appropriate. Check the trim tab and adjust the rear of the tab to the right (Yes, to the right) in increments until it's better....

You don't say what you are running. Steering torque is not uncommon on large motors, even with the trim tab all the way over. Bite the bullet and put in hydraulic steering. It does not cure the harder steering in one direction, but what it does do is hydraulically lock the steering at wherever you stopped turning the wheel so you don't have to maintain a death grip on it.

Steering torque. All engines have this-worse with higher hp engines. On some engines- at full trim- the tab has little effect. It may not even be in the water. As mentioned, you won't eliminate the problem, but can mask it by making setup changes: power steering, hydraulic steerming, NFB steering, changing engine height, props, torque tamer tab, etc. What engine/boat?prop are you running? You'll get good ideas from the experts here.

There are several complete new hydraulic steering kits on e-bay right now. Save $

Re: Boat turns right

Do you have a manual or hydraulic tilt and trim?
If hyraulic, try playing with the trim when WOT.

My 100HP really pulls hard even with trim tab set until the boat gets on plane.
Once on plane, the trim tab is competely out of the water anyways.

Re: Boat turns right

I am trying to visualize the size and type of propeller that allows the trim tab to be completely out of the water.-?

The only time that the trim tab has not compensated for thrust on my 140 looper, which is a torque monster, was when I had a bent skeg with a Skeggard on it. The local welder fixed that problem in about 20 minutes.

Re: Boat turns right

ezeke.

Have a look at where your trim tab is in relation to the bottom of your boat (when trimmed up).
My engine sits high on the boat and I only have a little boat and bunch of SS prop left in water at WOT.

Torque tab is useless to my set-up at 45MHP.
It really only comes into play when launching to plane.

Cheers. CF

Re: Boat turns right

After 64 years I can still see that the trim tab is almost completely behind the propeller, where it has always been. Respectfully, I think that you may not understand the concept.

I might be relatively inexperienced, but I've never had trouble adjusting the trim on a boat with the trim tab. Even on fairly large motors I've been able to allieviate my friends' sore arms! I'm with ezeke on this one...

ezeke.

I stand corrected. For some reason, my brain was confusing the issue.
Disregard my previous rant.
I'll stick with the Electrical / Motor repair issues.

Re: Boat turns right

On my 1977 115 rude the trim tab has a hole I think for cooling of the prop hub so my trim tab is always in the water!!
