I know many people here do not like Boat US/west Marine, but here it is anyway.

Getting my boat ready for a 10 day vacation, I fired up my chart plotter. A Navman 5100 b/w unit. I kept telling me No GPS. In the begining of the season, I had to take the antenna apart because of a problem I created when I istalled it. It was the same problem.

I decided rather than repalce the antenna ($130) I would buy the Navman 5500 color unit ($375 after price match and rebates)

I looked on the Iboats and other places on the Web, the biggest problem was getting the unit in time with out paying a small fortune in shipping.

So I called Boat US, and the one I called did not have it in stock, but referred me to another store only 10 minutes further from my house. So I went and bought it and they did match the best price I found on the web.

I installed it, and started having problems with it just shutting off. On closer inspection I noticed that the connector for the power was cracked. I called the west Marine store where I got and they did not have any other one in stock. I explained, that I was leaving on vacation in 3 days. The gentleman I was speaking with, check the computer, found another unit at a close store, and had it shipped next to thier store. He will also allow me just to bring in the broken part, so I do nat have to remove the antenna, or wiring to make the swap.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I have to give them a 10 in customer service.

Glad to hear it worked out. In your type of situation, that is where brick and mortar stores can excel!

I've had some pretty good luck with the stores. The one in Clinton, Ct. is a good example of who and who not to speak with. The older gentleman who has been working there for years is useless. The two young ladies who work there are beyond fantastic. I've had problems with returns in the past. I tried going to the one gentleman and had terrible and rude feedback. Once I started dealing with the two ladies, everything was completely different. They went over and above their duties to satisfy my problems. By the way, their prices have fallen drastically. I think they needed to do that because they tended to be 15%- 20 % higher than competitors.

West Marine is even better when your friend works there and can get you almost half price off on practically anything. :D
