I should have been more specific.

That is what I meant. A 10' piece of material should be plenty to replace the tongue. But that depends on if it is a straight tongue, or if it has frame rails attached. It is hard to come up with great advice without enough info.

As long as everyone remembers to have a minimum of 10% of the trailer weight on the tongue, they should be fine.
That rule still applies if the OP never extends the tongue. If someone were to load all their gear in the back of the boat for hauling it to the lake they may unknowingly reduce the tongue weight to dangerous levels.

That is one of the reasons I prefer trailers with that have the axle mounts welded to an angle iron under the frame rails, so the axle placement is adjustable. Extra tongue weight (within reason) won't hurt anything as long as the tow vehicle and tongue can handle it.
