Unhook the shift linkage and try and shift it in and out of gear by hand with the motor at idle. If it fixes the issue you need a cable, if it does not, you need lower unit service.

if you heard a grinding noise in the lower unit, and it ends up being the cable i would definately change the lower unit fluid just to be sure you get any shavings out of there to prevent catastrophic failure.

That's useful.... How about you tell us what engine, what drive and what years they are (that's engine year, not boat! They could easily be different, see my signature as an example.)... Maybe have a read of the sticky on 'How to ask a question'...

Ok. new at this. Chevy 1987 4cyln used older mercruiser outdrive I replaced last summer ran wonderful till yesterday can get serial # if needed. When this problem happened I could hear noise from motor crusing at 3000 rpm. The motor made loud grind bang and the prop quit turning motor still running temp went up quickly shut down let cool restarted motor will not go into gear forward or reverse. can it be water pump shaft. will try previous advice then pull lower unit if needed. I hope this gives more info. I appreciate the advice thanks Richard.

Sounds like you blew the outdrive. Soooooo, waterpump quit pumping and motor was still running, that is why you had temperature rise. My vote is that you need a new outdrive, or a serious rebuild. Check the oil in the drive for metal. If there is tons of metal, "houston, we have a problem".

ok removed lower unit oil does not seem to have a ton of metal, removed lower and upper units. The shift lever works, put back together put in forward and reverse turn prop clackety clackety clack from lower unit. Seems like not doing what it should. ?????? lower unit clutch and gears.

That clacking is normal, it's just the dog clutch riding over the ramps...

Remove the cover from the top of the upper, have a look in at the gears... If they look ok, then you may have a bust coupler...

The rubber bit on the end of the crankshaft. The input shaft from the drive is splined into it...

So this is in the motor where outdrive connects to crank shaft. How to tell for sure it is the coupler?

Re: boat was running noise will not go into gear

You can pull the outdrive and look at the coupler. You can also run the engine and look at the driveshaft to see if is turning (if you can see that area in your boat).

The coupler can fail in at least two ways however:

The rubber part can separate. If that happens you will usually smell burnt rubber and there may be some rubber "dust" in the bilge area.

The aluminum splines can strip out. That's the part you will be able to see if you pull the outdrive.

ok coupler seems ok good threads no wear on shaft. Have another out drive however this od has the 9 9/16 length it is longer than the one that came out will it still go into coupler?

Re: boat was running noise will not go into gear

If the rubber part of the coupler has slipped, then a visual look will not tell you anything.

If you use the other outdrive, you will need the correct length driveshaft. You can swap the driveshafts over.

Did you pop the top of the outdrive off and look at the gears?

Re: boat was running noise will not go into gear

yes gears seem ok. Stupid question again there should be gear oil in upper gear house correct. will swap out shafts re-lube and see if it goes into gear if not i will assume coupler. could it be the mount of the coupler broke off the fly wheel? Also when putting od on should the shift lever be able to rotate and get into the way

Thank you very much

Re: boat was running noise will not go into gear

pre 1985 mercrusier oil in lower unit milky no significant metal ? bad seal ? Oil in upper dark grey. Gears in upper look good. Boat is 1977 cobia has some structural issues ? bad engine allignment = coupler issue? Will puting OD on and try to run and shift hurt shaft? Need to pull engine to replace coupler? Is it worth the expense?????

thanks

Re: boat was running noise will not go into gear

Structural issues could easily change the engine alignment... Putting the Drive on could do some damage...
Yes, you have to pull the engine to replace the coupler... and you'll need an alignment tool to set the engine up correctly...

OMG I am stupid, After draining the upper units lube over night the gears are toast. Huge divot on bottom of top spline. Will change out shafts long to short on new used aplha and try again. Talking about the coupler really got me worried and threw my concentration to that, even have an appointment to replace coupler Monday morning will keep appointment just in case. I need to catch some lake erie perch to keep my sanity ASAP.

thanks
