Heres what happened before hand.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1710582#post1710582

Now we got it all back together and took it out yesterday.
It only wants to start when I put the stick all the way down to full throttle. Then it starts up and idles great.
When I put it into gear it runs fine with no misses up to about 10 mph. Then it will not go any faster. If I try and give it more gas after that it will sputter and kill it. But it runs fine at 10 mph. Sometimes I can put it at full throttle and it won't die but it won't increase rpms at all. Like its being cut off from gas. Only getting enough gas to go 10 mph and thats it. Somebody please help me. Could I have gotten water in the gas from the hydrolock? I wouldn't think so but I am not sure.

Re: Boat will not go fast

After being locked up from rust and hydrolock, it surprises me it runs at all.
To start with, do a compression test. Here is a list of things that can cause low rpm.

Engine Won't Reach Operating RPM. Check

  • Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
  • Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades
  • Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve Fuel System Test
  • Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse
  • Marine growth on hull and outdrive
  • Wrong gear ratio in outdrive
  • Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor)
  • Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive
  • Poor cylinder compression Compression Test
  • Carburetor defective, or wrong type.
  • Fuel pump pressure and vacuum
  • Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.
  • Engine Overheating
  • Engine timing and ignition system operation
  • Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.

Re: Boat will not go fast

I will do a compression test. But I am pretty sure it is a fuel issue. It was kinda doing this before it ingested water. So I don't think the water has anything to do with it. The fuel pump is brand new also. As far as all that fuel system testing that is beyond me. I will take it to my mechanic for that. Thanks for the advice, at least that gives me somewhere to start.

Could this be fouled plugs from the water in them?
Also is there another fuel filter besides the one in the carb and the fuel water separator that I can check first?

When I put it into gear it runs fine with no misses up to about 10 mph.

Water fouled plugs would miss, even at idle.
Of course I have had people bring in boats that they said idled great, then when I listen I hear a miss. Do the tests and find 1 or 2 cylinders with no compression at all.

God I hope not. I guess the compression test would be the best start. Thats gonna be the worst case scenario if I don't get compression out of a cylinder or two.
