I have a Johnson Oceanrunner 150 and have had problems the past two time i have taken it out. The first time, the motor would reach 5000rpm @ about 35mph. I changed the prop thinking that it may be the hub. The next time, it would do the same thing. When i got back to the dock, i put it in neutral waiting for other boats to load and unload. When it was my turn, i pushed forward, the motor reved up but no motion. I pulled back and it wouldn't back up neither. I then trimmed the motor up so that i could see the prop and then gave it gas again. The prop did turn and kick up water, but when I trimmed back down, the boat still wouldn't move. I think the problem is that something in the gearcase is slipping. Could there anything else that would cause that?

I would have to say your prop is slipping on the prop hub. With the outboard motor shut off and on the trailer put the motor in gear and then go back and see if the prop will spin with your hand with the motor in gear. It should not spin in gear and if it does then the rubber bushing is toast and you need to take your prop to a prop shop. Let us know what you find. Take care, Bob:)

After reading your post again I see that you have changed your prop out. So if the prop is good then you need to make sure your outboard cables are actually are shifting the outboard when you move the shifter forward or reverse. So I would remove the engine cover and look and make sure your shifter cable is connected and if it is then shift the outboard forward and verify that your outboard is shifting and verify it is shifting in reverse. Let us know you might have a bad shifter cable. Take care, Bob:)

Re: Boat will not move forward or in reverse

I was able to turn the prob with it in gear. Before i changed the prop the other day, I did have to put the engine in gear so that I could bust the nut loose and it did not turn. I also noticed the sound of the gears turning when I spun it by hand before I put the new one on. Now, when I turn the prop, there is no sound. That is why i think it is in the gearcase and it being a different prop on now.

Believe me, if there was something in the case broken, with the exception of the Dog gear not engaging, you would know it.

Everything is Shafts and gears. Anything breaks and the noises start.(Grinding/crunching)

Shift rod moves lower Shift lever. Shift lever moves Dog gear.

Is the new prop - NEW - or a used spare?

Do the spun prop test and see. Quickest and easiest check to begin with.

Good answers from Kenny G above is the prop a used one? If so that is probably the problem. What I would do is remove the prop and put the prop nut back on it and get an open end wrench and see if you can turn the prop shaft by itself using the open end wrench and if it doesn't move when the motor is in gear then the prop is spinning on you with a load being applied to it. Check that out and let us know. Bob:)
