Go to the Prop topics and ask the same question or search some threads for spun prop or hub, I think this is at least part of the problem.

Re: boat will not plane out!!!

i aint the pro here, but from what i read, i'd be gettin rida some barnicales and see where that leads ya......sounds like yer on the right track to me.....<br />ya need to get a tach ontoit too(at least one ya know works proper). revin right up there ay? but don't go. start with the crap on the bottom, if that ain't it, best i read, only 2 things cause that, spun prop hub, and a spent coupler......but how do ya know w/o a tach?<br /><br />
jaybirdhi<br /> if it helps the rps will hit about 4800 in nuetral and maxes out at about 3300 in gear.
i don't know yer engine at all, but i'd think that 4800 rpm in neutral (no load rpm's) wouldn't be that great for it and that 3300 in gear would be to low for wot...only a guess, i don't know the specs on that 460 for wot. what is wot on yer rig?.....

I had no idea barnacles grew that fast. Litle pains in the butt! Don't have to worry about them here in TN!

The more horses you lay into a prop the higher the chance of spinning a hub. Pull your prop and have it looked at or at least borrow another and see what that does. If you get even a modest improvment then you know you have a spun hub. You still have to get that hull clean though. Still, given the HP and the fact it was running fine a few weeks ago, I am am betting on the prop being the major issue here<br /><br />M

Re: boat will not plane out!!!

i will change the prop today. question though... if the prop was spun would the rpm's not jump like car with a bad cluch. the rpms are being held down which makes me believe there is no slipping. i jumped in the water yesterday and the whole bottom is covered with barnicles. i mean not one square inch of flat bottom with out barnacles all over it. i still cant believe that would slow the boat down that much but what do i know. i am on my 5th boat but this is the first time ever leaving in the water. my rpm gauge works now and no i dont get over 5000 rpms in nuetral.should i?? also when im crusing along(at 10mph) i hear a knocking very lightly. its not in the motor so im assuming its either in the drive or on the bottom of the boat. sound familiar???

When things like this come up sometimes its hard to believe its not a pratical JOKE<br /><br /><br />The marine growth is going to grow at and exponential rate to due anything but haul the boat is a compleat waste of everybodys time and your going to destroy the motor  <br /><br /><br />tommays

"The marine growth is going to grow at and exponential rate to due anything but haul the boat is a compleat waste of everybodys time"<br /><br />--tommays<br /><br />thanks for the help everyone. I am sort of new to this so i didnt know i needed bottom paint. I will take care of it this weekend. I guess if i wasnt such a newbie then i wouldnt need this site. To bad there wasnt a site like this for people learning how to use grammer. Then tommay the difference between DO and DUE and when to use them in a sentence. OH and its complete not compleat. sorry captain.

"How to Win Friends and Influence People" should be added to your summer reading list....you need some pointers.

Re: boat will not plane out!!!

You said your boat ran 48 mph in May. You also said you're hearing some knocking. I'd start with the most obvious- replace first your tachometer, check if your hub is spun by marking it and see if the marks will change alignment after you take her out again for test. This is easy test. If hub proves OK, check your engine coupler. If these 2 are ok, most likely your engine. Running the engine in neutral puts no load in it as compared to running the boat.

You're CORRECT the FIRST 5 times you were told NICELY that the BOTTOM was a PROBLEM was not plain enough<br /><br />Yes i am dyslexic but most people have the insight to see that when i try to help them BUT its always good to insult people who try to help you understand your problem because you don't want to believe it could be something simple<br /><br />tommays

Re: boat will not plane out!!!

I'll have to agree with the others.....Clean the bottom first.<br /><br />Then VERIFY the tach(get another one). No load RPMs don't mean much...other than checking them can damage an engine that doesn't have a REV limiter!<br /><br />Check the timing with a timing light. (should be somewhere between 13-15 degrees or so to start)<br />I'm running around 12 degrees with a mild cam and have no preignition("PING") on ARCO 87 regular.<br />(In 1987 OMC recommended 15 degrees BTDC with 89 Octane fuel, 10 degrees with 86 or less and said that performance would be reduced)Full throttle operating range was recommended to be 4400-4800rpm.<br /><br /> I was told by a race engine builder that the 460 likes advanced timing. Time it so that it pings and back it off about 2 degrees at a time until it doesn't "ping" anymore.<br /><br />I get around 5000 rpm and 61 mph with a 19-14.5 [3 blade]re-pitched to 20 (Pitot-speedo, unverified).<br /><br /><br />475hp? The 460 is easily capable of that....with $2000 aftermarket headers and a host of other performance upgrades. If you are running the stock OMC exhaust manifolds it probably won't happen. Restricted exhaust is a great HP limiter.<br /><br /><br />Regards, <br /><br />Rick
