Re: boat with no engine ?

Like is there a certain percentage so one knows he is getting a good deal for the boat.
For example $1 sq foot is a reasonable price for renting an apartment to calculate a price for monthly rent near me "quick estimate".
Is there some kind of percentage or some type of calculation to know if the price is a reasonable price to buy a boat.

Your example isn't even close to being accurate (X number of $$ per square foot is typical). I live on the water, the house across the street might be nicer and cost much less, two blocks away and the cost is cheap in comparison. Same with your apartments, it's all about location, and a block or two can make a huge difference, so can a few upgrades. I have customers that build boats in the same size range and the sale price can vary from 400,000 to 1.5 million. The formula you are looking for is, bank account divided by desire, options and reality = boat.

Yes I get the location part but location equal , sq foot equal , engine equal, type of hull material equal for boat and your telling me the shape or design can make it fluctuation that much.

I understand a metal boat to a fibreglass or composite based boat make some significant different but even that much seems unreasonable but just me. But ok hull materal equal. your going to tell me the electronics equipment and appliances are going to be millions of dollars more.

OK. No formula, no magic, just research as Coolbri suggests.

In a world of INFINITE possibilities, boat pricing is no different then any other consumer product, there are millions of choices, and an equally diverse price point.

As has been stated several times above: It just takes MONEY, how much depends on YOU. How much do you want to spend?

As has been asked many times: What is it you want to accomplish?

BE SPECIFIC:
I'm single, 20 & live an hour from a major inland (fresh water) waterway, in the upper Midwest US.

I want to be able to tow skiers, w/ a couple of friends aboard, have room for a cooler or 2, and be able to tow the boat & trailer w/ my 2010 Chevy Tahoe, V6.

I don't know anything about any type of combustion engine (I know where the gas goes on my truck & how to check the oil, but don't do any other routine maintenance myself)

I am diligent about keeping my truck in good running order, even though I pay someone else to service it for me.

I do not need to have space to sleep on board, or have restroom facilities on board

I prefer the look & style of fiberglass boats versus aluminum boats

I think I'd like to listen to music while boating, but I doubt I'll ever fish out of the boat

I can afford to pay to store my boat close to where I want to go boating, so I probably will. Can I arrange for them to check & maintain my boat & trailer for me?

I want a turnkey BRAND NEW 2014 boat & can afford to pay $$K (it will be several tens of thousands up to an unlimited amount)

As an excercise, it seems redundant to keep asking the same question in multiple ways, in multiple threads & failing to respond to the simplest, most basic questions.

Not sure where but in 1 of the threads someone asked you to be specific & ask a direct question so that you can get a direct answer.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That's Funny
Simple.......
So pick out the hull maker you want...get a price...then pick out the motor you want get a price...add your labor to install.
Add all three and you get a price for the boat you want.

Get the price for the same boat with everything on it....... do your formula and you will see the mark up.

Don't we have another forum for this kind of discussion?? I thought this was the Boat Restoration Forum!!!! Maybe it's just me but this kind of discussion just doesn't fit here. I think it should be moved elsewhere.:rolleyes:

Uhhmmm, I was not questioning the enjoyment factor of the discussion only that it did not seem to be a discussion about boat restoration and repair. I have seen other such topics like these that have been moved to a more appropriate forum and was confused about this one. MY BAD!!!

Re: boat with no engine ?

A used boat with no engine is relatively easy to price since you know what it cost when new. You can research the same boat in mint, average, or rough condition as the case may be. You then subtract the cost to replace everything that is missing from the hull. That includes the material itself and the labor to install it if you cannot do it yourself. You then have a running boat. But you likely could have bought one (any of the three conditions) cheaper than the one you essentially rebuilt. As for new hulls, there is no magic formula to determine hull/power relationship. The power options are variable as are the hull options. The same power options are generally available on a 28 foot boat as there would be on a 35 foot boat but obviously the hull will cost more and there likely will be more hull options. You are beating yourself up over a non-issue.

Re: boat with no engine ?

Cannot be done! Try pricing an entry level boat like a Bayliner then a premium like EdgeWater or Everglades. You can probably by the Bayliner with motor for the price of one of the other 2 hulls.

Basically I just want to beable to calculate reasonable prices on boats new / used and reasonable prices on just hulls or just boat engines.
So I don't get ripped off when buying

Re: boat with no engine ?

Sure can. I'm not a fan of in water slips and bottom paint. I bought an indoor dry slip, also called a 'dock-ominum'. Now when I'm ready to take the boat out I call and say "fill her with gas, 20# of ice in the fishbox, and I'll be there at ____ am/pm. When I arrive she is tied to the dock. When I return a dock girl ties her off. Then she is pulled from the water, hull rinsed, motor flushed, and put back on her rack. She stays much cleaner and no bird poop. She is scheduled to be detailed at the marina in Oct. When the Yamaha electronics said "100 hour service due", I told the dockmaster and it was completed in about 2 1/2 weeks. My marina has slips for rent-- at todays prices I purchased one from an individual owner and just pay the HOA fee now.

Um, yeah, thanks, but my post was actually a suggested list of questions/statements that Sam could (and I was URGING him too) ask for help w/ whatever the whole point was w/ the multiple threads & circular logic loops.......

Re: boat with no engine ?

The easiest thing to do would be to buy the new boat complete and pull the motor and sell it for new, then install your motor. This could be risky because you may void your warranty.

A manufacturer may not warranty a hull only sale either because they don't know for sure what kind of motor you're going to put in it.

To ensure not being ripped of, you'll probably cheat yourself out of time and money anyway going back and forth to dealers trying to negotiate a hull only sale. This isn't something you'll be able to do over the phone or in an email, they're going to want to speak to you in person to make sure you're serious... and to give you the hard sell on a boat already in stock.

So... your best bet would be to buy an old rotten used hull and restore it and install your own motor... then we can move this thread back into the resto forum where it started!

... or you may be so paranoid about being ripped off you'll never actually buy a boat and spend the rest of your life pricing out different options trying to make sure you don't get ripped off.
