Lake Mojave, namely kathrines landing, seems boaters think they have the right to leave their ez-up frames and cheap plastic chairs on beaches to hold their spot until tomorrow or next weekend. I can see if you are out skiing, fishing, run to the marina, fine, but not overnight if you are not camping. I consider this poor boating etiquette. For those that are not familiar with Lake Mojave, Laughlin Nevada is less than 10 miles away, boaters either rent a slip or pull their boats and get a room at a casino, wanting to continue boating the next day, they will have a spot all picked out and reserved from the day or weekend before. I am searching my mind for ideas to combat this behavior. I thought of dragging the metal frames out and sinking them, but that is polluting. I thought of vandalizing the belongings, but they would just get abandoned and become an eyesore. None of the stuff is really worth taking. This year, I'm taking the spot, stacking the items left behind neatly to the side, and if nobody shows by the time i leave in the late afternoon, I'm going to haul it back and put it in a marina dumpster. After all it's my lake too. Am I out of line on this kind of thinking? any other suggestions?

Leaving your stuff over night to hold your spot is littering and pizz poor boating etiquette.
Leaving your gear set up while you go out for a ski/tube acceptable. :)

I dont feel you're out of line at all. We have this same problem on the Pearl river here where I live. The DPWFP takes care of it here. They run a garbage barge in the mornings up and down the river to pick up garbage from the cans on the sand bars. They also load up any unattended camping gear and keep it for 36 hours at their dock. After 36 hours its trashed. I"ve seen some really nice tents, tables and chairs get thrown away.

If its there overnight, I'd consider it abandoned and into my truck or the dumpster it goes. They should fine the owners for littering or dumping if they're dumb enough to file a theft report.

We used to deal with people that would leave their fish-houses,on the shore, on my grandparents property without asking by dragging them to the public launch and hanging a FREE-PLEASE TAKE sign on the front of it........

shoe totally agree with you that is probably the place that happens the most. I forget what the time limit is but the rangers do ticket them when they know that they left there stuff over night but does not happen enough. I have talked to people that say they leave stuff there for weeks at a time and they think it is cool:mad: The ones that leave stuff there a long time usally will have a old jetski there but if you check it out there is no motor in it. Only reason I go there is we have friends and my wife like it there I would rather stay up at cottonwood or havasu myself.

we usually go to cottonwood now, but the problem is there too. not as bad but it still happens. the problem for me going to cottonwood it trying to go south on the I-15 with all of the outbound Vegas traffic. Thinking 95 south to I-40 then east.

Why am I the only one that doesn't think that people leaving stuff overnight makes it someone else's stuff to grab? While I totally think its wrong to leave your junk somewhere, leaving it in a place OTHER than a known junkyard or curbside doesn't make my junk your junk. If it's on public property and I leave it overnight, it's up to the city or landowner to dispose or move it, not just some citizen. Otherwise, while the junk owner may or may not be guilty of littering, you are guilty of theft.

So as the TSA guy said, "Don't touch my junk."

You have the option to remove your junk. It's not an option when dealing with the TSA.

"Reserving" first come first serve real estate like this is both illegal and unethical.

Take it to the dumpster right away dont wait till the next day. That way they learn their lesson if the come back to collect their stuff. Hopefully your there to tell them it was tossed out since it was left behind like trash. Then if they say oh we were saving a spot you can explain to them that is a public boating area not a living room couch!

landowner to dispose or move it?

landowner= ME!
dispose or move it= what I will be doing!
Lake Mojave is in the Lake Mead National recreation area. I take that as owned by all, not just the greedy.
a few years back, i rented a house boat on Mojave and kept it in one cove all week. within sight of the cove i was using was an abandoned campsite, complete with ez-up frame, chairs, etc. no-one returned to camp all week. disgusting to do that to the peoples property.

Throwing their stuff away is just counter-acting them being jerks by you being a jerk. Taking it down and moving it to the side is the more civilized approach. Yeah, you'll still have a fight probably when they come back but at least you'll have done nothing even remotely wrong at that point.

People that leave stuff, should leave their name, address, and a contact number. Otherwise, its just trash, and trash doesn't reserve a spot

you're right! The stuff that is left behind is cheap. an ez-up frame without the canvas is useless. this is stuff that they know people don't want and if it gets taken, big deal, it's crap. I don't wan't to fool around with other peoples stuff, especially other outdoorsy people. but this is getting out of hand and is just plain rude and greedy, so i guess be being a little of a jerk can't hurt.

Well, if that's the case, the guy left the stuff on his own land and you stole it.

Chew on that for a while.
