Re: Boating Etiquette 101

We wave, even my 3 1/2 yr old daughter waves. 95% of the people here wave. Even coming back down the Cal Sag in Chicago Saturday, my daughters and wife in the bow waving, we had boats of all sizes and people of all "classes" waving back. Even in the playpen on the lake, people in multimillion $$ yachts to people in fishing boats were waving back at us.On the water, we are all the same. It is really too bad that we can't all be like that to everyone, everywhere, all the time.:(

Have you ever seen the comercial of the lady waving at the store, down town, etc. Everybody looking at her like she was crazy. And then in the end it shows them on the boat waving. That is us. HAPPY to be there.:D

Do you greet everybody even when you?ve had a horrible day?the fish aren?t biting, you accidentally dumped your beer overboard, and that strange rattle you hear from the engine compartment might be your lower unit preparing to seize-up again?

you better start waving. sounds like you need a beer to cry into and a tow home. :)

yep..I always wave. And when riding a motorcycle too! And depending on what part of the country I am in, wave to fellow motorists. Just common courtesy!:)

Vettes too. To be honest, it gets old waving on the street, but I am so relaxed on the water I don't mind. Having had bikes, vettes, and a vehicle that looks like a jeep, you feel like you have to wave, even when you are driving something else.

I have always waved to fellow boaters, its like we all belong to one big club.
On our lake it gets quite busy and most people don't wave, unless its someone we know.
However my teenage girls always wave at everyone, even when they are on the tube.
We tend to get some funny looks from the fisherman when we go by pulling a tube (of course always keeping ample distance from them) and they get a wave and holler from my teen girls.
Makes the time out on the water even that much more fun.

On either of my bikes I always wave to other riders when I see them and it's safe to do so (usually nod otherwise). On the boat I've only been waved to once and gladly returned the gesture. Any time I've waved to anyone or tried to even talk to another fisherman, I generally get no response back. For some reason people up here that have boats (especially nice ones) seem to think they own the place and owe you no respect. The people that own lake front cabins and boats that are outside chilling or doing yard work seem to get it though and respond back.

Almost all boaters wave in town here (Norfolk and environs). Up on the Eastern Shore, everyone waves. You also wave to other car drivers once you get off the highway and to anyone you drive past in their yard.

I have always waved to passing vessels, In my opinion it tells the other vessel operator "I see you and I am ok, and NOT in need of help" and when I get a wave in response i know they see me and they are ok and NOT in need of help.
