State or Federal waters? Around here on Federal COE lakes, legally no weapons except hunting in season.

It may need to be registered in the state but except under very limited conditions, the Constitution allows you to carry a NON-Concealed weapon, out in the open, in public.

The other option is to carry it unloaded, in a locked box, that is not readily accessible from the helm.
Similar to transporting a firearm in the trunk of your car.
Handguns may pose a problem in some jurisdictions but unloaded long-arms are a different matter.

I didn't realize hand guns were allowed in CA any longer.

In WA state it is not unusual to shoot a large halibut before you bring it aboard.

No pirates. More concerned with bears or big cats coming down to the water where the littles are playing.Other than that I just love my guns. I know its no prob in NV,but I do boat in CA quite a bit. I guess it would most likely be USFS land/water.

You might try calling the sheriff of the area you will be boating in to ask.

Statistically, you have a 50/50 chance with a bear and a gun. You may scare it off, or you might just make it angry. Pepper spray puts you around 90%. Big cats aren't a concern... There have been around 20 documented deaths from mountain lions in the last 130 years in the US. Pretty much every animal you can name is more deadly, even deer kill more people per year (around 200!)

(and no, i'm not anti-gun, I've got a fairly healthy collection of most of period russian firearms, was just out shooting my newest ak47 earlier today. But I've also mountain biked 15 feet from a big cat I didn't see, and they are far more scared of you than you are of them. People aren't one of their normal menu items.)

Also if you go by a state or Fed park welcome center when it's open you can ask. If there is a welcome center.

I agree about the pepper spray vs gun on bear. We seem to see them on a regular basis mtn biking, but they have run off(so far). But I've always heard cats can stalk people, this is not true? We have a few even up here.......

I know guys that use 10mm glocks or big revolvers for bear protection.

Obtain a concealed weapon permit and be sure the pistol you have is ready and your willing.

You don't need an excuse to arm yourself. In todays world of cowardly violent drugged out people that in of itself is enough if you ask me. You shouldn't fear natures animals attacking, more so the people who have no concern for your life. My Sig P220 goes with me most everywhere and has since 1989. Trust me if a bear wants some 230 g sleeping pills one right after the other then he can have his fill.
