I live in grizzly country and I don't carry a firearm any longer when I am out camping and fishing, after using bear spray twice, I can tell you it is far more effective than trying to shoot a bear in the right spot in an excited situation. Encountering bears and cats where I live is a pretty common event and the bear spray has never failed me, or a bunch of friends that I do go out to the woods with, we have even used it on Moose, which are a hell of a lot meaner than bears, now cats, it is effective on and has been used quite successfully on, in fact our wildlife dept recommends it for cats. I am not anti gun at all and own many, including a .500 S&W mag(Pain to shoot!), but I will still take my bear spray.

I can honestly say, I was surprised at how well it works, and I am a combat trained urban, close quarters specialist, in fact the last 10 years in the Military, that is what I trained people on, close quarters urban combat and going up against a 600 pound grizzly is much more intense.

Yeah just make sure you know which way the wind is blowing bud, inhaling bear spray is horrible!!

I have inhaled it more than once, I worked in the local bear spray factory helping a friend out who was the owner of the company, believe me, I have been exposed to it just about anyway you can think of, had cans blow up in my face, had cans leak on my pants, if you can think of it, I have felt it. That said, I will take a blast of bear spray any day over a 600 pound pissed off grizzly in my face! Just remember bear spray wears off, grizzlies don't!

I always heard:

Grizzlies has nuts, berries and grass in it and smells like pepper..

Just to clear one thing up, pepper spray and bear spray are two entirely different things, the bear spray is mixed with a few chemicals that you will not find in straight pepper spray, the bear spray is much more potent than regular pepper spray, regular pepper spray has virtually no effect on me, bear spray will put me to my knees

Several years ago we were doing some work on the Local PD vehicles(I was the supervisor), anyway I had one guy that would literally sit in the trunk of the vehicle as he did his work, I warned him time and time again that he should remove the contents of the trunk before getting in and he did a pretty good job removing certain important things, you know things that can kill you? Anyway I'm sitting in my chair supervising 15 guys working in 10 or so cop cars in the parking lot and suddenly I hear this woosh, I look over towards the sound and the back of this car with this certain employee is one giant white cloud and its getting bigger and bigger as the woosh continues for like 30 seconds, I know this sound its a big fire extinguisher going off so I just start busting up laughing and head towards the car to retrieve my employee, as I enter the cloud I start gasping my eyes and nose start running, it was horrible but I being the trooper persevered on mission and then it hits me, I can't hold me breathe anymore and this is not just the contents of a fire extinguisher, this is OC, and the employee is now on his own!!!

I get out of the cloud and there is now 15 or 20 cops coming out of the station and instantly rolling on the ground laughing at the carnage, one officer runs towards me and grabs my hand while another grabs a hose and I get some water on my face and one officer is forcing my eyes open I can barely see the employee next to me getting the same treatment so I'm ok..

Turns out my employee accidentally changed positions as he was sitting in the trunk and knocked the discharge pin out of a large fire extinguisher and then bent the handle so it bound up and discharged fully, then in his expedient evacuation of the trunk he broke the plastic nozzle off a riot sized bottle of OC, Carnage ensued...

I offered everything I could to make it right with the Captain on duty, all he would tell me is that it was no problem but he could in no way assure me that the video would not wind up on youtube as he was crying laughing...

Although I cant' say if it works on bears, another non-lethal self defense item (my wife keeps one in her antique shop) is a can of wasp killer--the one that shoots the 20' stream. Way better than sprays that have to be used in relatively close quarters. Which is good if you perfer to be 20' from the bad guy. And you don;t have to worry too much about collateral damage from misses, over shots and ricochets (I shuddered when I read the OP wanted a gun to protect his children from a bear). Seems to me it would be good for smaller animals including wild dogs, raccoons in the trash, etc.

It's also something you could use to stop mischief when you can't legally use deadly force, like if you encounter someone messing with your car, shed or boat. And often it's better to convince the bad guy or critter to retreat than to try to completely incapacitate.

Sure it's not going to stop every bad guy or bad thing from getting you but every such "weapon" has serious drawbacks, from being uneffective to being too effective, as well as expense, legal possession, ease of use without training, etc.

I will stick with my gun. My dad had many (I have them and my grandpa's also) guns when I was little. I started shooting when I was 4 or 5. My dad started reloading when I was around 12 and now I reload all centerfire ammo I shoot except for the personal protection ammo in our carry mags. My friend is an FFL/SOT so I know the laws and figure after this long the training is enough.

You stick to your gun thumpar, after 26 years in the military, wounded, own over 35 guns, including many full auto as well as a couple of .50 cals, one being a Barrett, I will stick with my bear spray, I also carried in in combat when I was in Iraq for use in non-lethal situations.

I have 100% confidence in the bear spray, besides, if it comes down to a grizz, it better be swallowing your arm when you shoot it, I have seen to many people prosecuted for defending themselves here in Montana, Wyoming as well as Idaho, now Alaska is a different story, grizz is not endangered up there, but I still carry the spray when I go fishing in Alaska. I have no desired to kill a bear, and if I have a tool that allows me to get away as well as the bear and teaching it, that humans are not nice, I am all for it.

I am also a FFL, like I said before, you and I are close enough, we ought to spend a weekend shooting, it would be fun, that .500 S&W will put a dent in your wrist and the one .50 rifle I have will knock your socks off, of course the .416 rigby I have will knock you on your butt, I always love to see someone shoot that for the first time.

The only reason I am so strong on the bear spray is, I don't have to aim, I don't have to be accurate, I simply point and spray, it puts out a 30 foot cloud at 30 feet that the bear can't avoid, even my .500 only puts out a 1/2" bullet and it has to be very accurate to bring that bear down instantly., Like I said, after 10 years of teaching close quarters urban combat, taking a pissed off bear on, is way worse, it happens quite a bit faster and they are a lot bigger and meaner.

Forgot to mention, if you spray a grizzly bear with wasp spray and are caught, you will be given a citation by USFWS, which could cost you up to $5000 and up to a 2 years in jail, Grizzly bears in the lower 48 are an endangered species and you can be cited for trying to kill them, or using a recognized poison to spray them with. The EPA has not allowed any studies on the effectiveness of wasp spray, due to the fact it is a recognized poison and classified as such, bear spray is classified as a pest deterrent and not a poison and poses no harmful threat to an endangered species.

I have a question.... and forgive my ignorance as I do not live in bear country.........But say you are catching some zzzz's in your tent and a bear happens upon your camp and from his sounds he may be aggressive...

How in the world do you spray him with bear repellant from inside the tent and persuade him to leave?

You don't, you only use the spray when the bear is either charging or attacking, it is not a repellent, it is a detterent, big difference, if the bear makes entrance into your tent, then you spray and take the hit yourself, as I said, the bear spray wears off, the bear does not. The chances of a bear in the tent is very small, it has happened, but it is not the norm, normally it happens when a bear is startled, now on the tent scenario, the best way to avoid that happening, don't store food or odorous items in your tent and don't sleep in the cloths you cook in. Bear are attracted by odors, if there is no odor, then normally no bear.

That said, trying to describe every single instance of a bear situation is impossible, you plan for the normal and pray you don't run into the odd ball bear! But that is like just about everything else in life. After being in two bear encounters, the least of my worries is getting bear spray on me.

By the way, when you are in your tent at night trying to get some sleep and you hear something snuffling around outside your tent it don't matter if it is a bear, all snuffling sounds in the middle of the night sound aggressive, which I why I sleep in a 5th wheel trailer!
