Regardless of what path it takes, this weekend will be a washout.

Debating whether to pull the boat out. Don't know if I trust it on the lift.

We got the boat in around three PM so I dicided to drop a fishing line in just south of buttonwood. I fished for about two hours until I ran out of bait. Caught two rock fish and one large mouth Bass. No keepers. Some boater did buss us around four PM.Rocked the boat some.

Saturday will be fine. There, I said it.

My chances of being right are as good as the weather peeps. I plan on being in the Upper Bay both Friday and Saturday.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

For me, Saturday (and maybe Friday afternoon) will consist of storm preparation. Removing canvas and electronics, securing windows, etc. I have a couple options for where to leave my boat but it mostly depends on Irene's track and the expected surge in the upper Bay.

One GOOD thing (if there's any good at all)- there shouldn't be a huge river runoff since the storm appears to be tracking east of the Bay, and land areas west hopefully won't be deluged.
If you recall, in '03 Isabel tracked west of us and the heavy runoff left many Bay areas submerged for days.

Rob - do you need a hand Friday afternoon? I have some free time and will be in the area if you do. I also plan on being in the area Saturday with Famiy and could probably break free for a little if you need a hand then. Don't be afraid to give me a shout if I could be of any help!! I will PM you my number just in case.

Thanks Brandon, some help won't hurt!
If the predicted surge is bad then I'll be vacating the marina on Saturday morning but otherwise I'll be doubling/ adding lines so she doesn't move from the slip.
I'll give you a call around 1PM Friday if that's OK.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

After some coaxing, I have decided to not ride it out aboard, and will counter being onboard with a healthy dose a preparedness. I am headed down friday / saturday to storm proof the boat...

1. Double up lines. Not redundant, but different cleats to different pilings
2. Put Helm seats in cabin
3. Put Tv, dvd, generator, and radio in the car
4. Tape plastic over cabin windows, bow hatch, and cabin door to keep driven rain out
5. Remove all covers, canvas, and bimini (including poles)
6. Remove Tv, and VHF antennas
7. Duct tape all cockpit deck hatches
8. Seal all vents (fuel/water/bilge)
9. Cover/Seal dash
10. Triple check all lines
11. Say a few prayers
12. Hitch the ski up and head home...

Did I forget anything?

How abut checking neighboring boats to make sure they don't damage yours?
Double-check bilge pump operation and battery connections.
Apply an "X" of tape on all windows to minimize damage and mess from flying debris.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

anyone worried about their boats with this hurricane comming? I know it will prob not be a direct hit, but it kinda looks like it might get close.

I have my sailboat moored out in the open on the susquhana river.
I might go move it to a hurricane hole. Find a good cove somewhere.

If the water gets this high, I'll have bigger issues to deal with than the boat. The Maxum is tucked away on the trailer in the driveway.

that reminds me of when katrina hit, people were tying down their boats that were on trailers in their yards.

In this one home video taken during the storm you can see a boat floating, that still had the trailer underneath it.

I think they climbed into the boat, and unkooked the trailer, then used the boat just like they were on a lake.

Of course! You just gotta prepare as well as possible and hope it makes it thru unscathed.

Call me if you need a hand, I may be working from home that day.
Thanks Scott. I should be OK with Brandon's help.
Unless the track changes to the west I'll be leaving the boat in the slip.
If you guys are at Tydings afterward, I'd appreciate a call.
