Upper Chesapeake Bay Restaurants

So, what is everyones favorite Upper Chesapeake Bay Restaurants and where are they?

We have tried Nauti Goose (Noth East) and Tidewater (Havre De Grace) both were great.

I enjoy trying new ones that i can take the boat to and dock at. Any suggestions?

a little farther south, but Blue fins is a nice place to eat on Middle River, in Essex / middle river, MD.
It is just south of the 702 bridge, where it crosses middle river.
this place is on the west shore of the river.

any where north of bear creek seems to be pretty sparse with dock-up reasturants. I heard that Bear creek has a dock bar.

Canal Day is held in the mooring basin on the south side of the C&D canal in South Chesapeake City. It's like Mardi Gras North. In years' past the festivities have gotten waaaay out of hand (too many boats and wildness) so they've regulated the number of boats permitted.
Slips are only available by lottery, and I think the CG limits the number of boats allowed in the basin that weekend. I want nothing to do with those people and stay WELL AWAY from the area. If you really want to attend the best way is in another boat that's already going, or by car.

Here's an amazing shot of a prior Canal Day:

St. Michaels- The Crab Claw. Not fancy but great steamed crabs.

Baltimore Inner Harbor- Phillips Seafood, Cheesecake Factory, and of course Ruth's Chris and the Rusty Scupper!

Havre de Grace- a new transient pier allows free dockage (not overnight) for boaters. My favorite eateries are Coakleys and LaCucina.

Sassafras River- the Granary for fine dining, or (downstairs) the Sassafras Grill for light fare.

So Arks, your saying canal day is not for kids. From the looks of that place I might watch for dry land. How is the canal on a "normal" weekend? Where are some safe places to ski/kneeboard? I have to imagine the mouth of the elk where I went this weekend has got to be crazy after memorial day.

Eats: Tidewater, MacGregors (same general area, different atmospheres). Watermans in Rock Hall (dockage available), Granary if you want fine dining on the Sasafrass. There's a ton of places and alot of local spots are terrific, those just stick out.

Skiing etc is not allowed in the canal itself:

Speed: No vessel in the waterway shall be raced or crowded alongside another vessel. Vessels of all types, including pleasure craft, are required to travel at all times at a safe speed throughout the canal and its approaches so as to avoid damage by suction or wave wash to wharves, landings, riprap protection, or other boats, or injury to persons. Pilots and vessel operators transiting the canal and its approaches are warned that violation of this rule may result in having their privilege to transit the canal suspended. Passages of vessels through the canal will be monitored and specific cases will be investigated where damage by suction or wave wash does occur. Owners and operators of yachts, motorboats, rowboats, and other craft are cautioned that large deep-draft ocean-going vessels and other large commercial vessels ply the canal, and such owners and operators should be particularly careful to moor or anchor well away from the main ship channels, with moorings and lines which are sufficient and proper.Right-of-way: All vessels proceeding with the current shall have the right-of-way over those proceeding against the current. Large vessels or tows must not overtake and attempt to pass other large vessels or tows in the waterway. All small pleasure craft shall relinquish the right-of-way to deeper draft vessels, which have a limited maneuvering ability due to their draft and size.Stopping in waterway: Vessels will not be permitted to stop or anchor in the ship channel.Water skiing: Water skiing in the waterway is prohibited between Reedy Point and Welch Point.Sailboats: Transiting the canal by vessels under sail is not permitted between Reedy Point and Welch Point.Anchorage and wharfage facilities. The anchorage basin at Chesapeake City and free wharfage facilities on the west side of the anchorage basin are available for small vessels only. These facilities are of limited capacity, and permission to occupy them for periods exceeding 24 hours must be obtained in advance from the dispatcher at Chesapeake City.Projections from vessels. No vessel carrying a deck load which overhangs or projects beyond the sides of the vessel will be permitted to enter or pass through the waterway. Vessels carrying rods, poles, or other gear extending above the top of the vessel?s mast will be required to lower such equipment to a level with the top of the mast before entering the waterway.

Yeah, Canal day is for BIG kids only. I understand the police have "toned it down" somewhat, but it can still get pretty crazy late-night.

On any other weekend it's just fine, but dockage is tough to get. I've almost always had to raft (tie) to other boats and walk across them to reach shore (not something I enjoy).

Skiing/tubing/kneeboarding- NOT anywhere in the canal- it's illegal.
Yes, the Elk can get rough and make skiing difficult.
In no specific order, I like:
- The Bohemia River (above the bridge)
- Cabin John Creek
- the Sassafras (out of the channel) near Ordinary Point
- between Fishing Battery and the APG channel
- Swan Creek near APG (tip- 2 bouyed slalom courses here)
- the Susquehanna River between Garrett Island and I-95 bridge.

That ought to keep you busy!! :D

Thanks for the info, i didn't realize it got like this. Not exactly the amotsphere i am looking for. I will just visit another weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to try some of them out. 2 weekends ago we did go to Havre De Grace and dock at the transient pier for the day. (Pretty rough at the docks though) Very nice option to have.

My wife took me to Tidewater for my birthday (mid April, by car not boat :( maybe next time) Great restaurant though.

I am going to look up the Granary on the Sasafrass, sounds like a nice option for a romantic night.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Please chime in if you know of more!

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Hey everyone!! Just wanted to introduce myself. I am John and I am new to boating. Just got my first project boat. Some assembly required.:(
After making sure everything works in the Susquehanna River, I want to check out the upper part of the bay.
I am looking into the Elk Neck and Susquehanna State Parks. Looking to camp and boat.

Hi John, welcom to iboats!

Hope you can get that boat running soon. Not much worse than being in boating season and being stuck on dry land working on the boat!

Where do you boat at on the river? Long level, Pequa? Hope you can get down to the bay this summer, lots more water!!

I have heard that elk neck state park can get pretty busy but never checked it out myself. (Although i do boat by it several times each summer!)

Hope to see you out on the water this summer!

Welcome John!
I used the boating facilities at Elk Neck for many years. They have a nice 4 lane launch ramp, pier, and plenty of trailer parking. Campsites are not arranged to provide direct access to docked boats, but people do camp and use their trailer boats via the ramp during their stay.
Here's some links:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/elkneck.html
http://www.baygateways.net/printer.cfm?dynamicprint=include_print_site.cfm&dynamickey=71

The Sand Island that Bowman mentioned is not an official campground. People do boat there and occasionally tent camp but there are absolutely no facilities.
