Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Do you like to ski/tube, swim, hang out with others (or all alone), cruise to a destination, cruise for sightseeing, travel to other towns/restaurants.....

Yes to all the above. :D

Before you launch, get yourself a good depthfinder and nautical chart of the area.

Check, I have a good Lowrance fish finder/GPS, and a pretty good chart of the upper bay.

Do you have any boating experience?

Only about twenty years worth. :D

What kind of boat do you have?

The current (and subject to change) ride is an old Bayliner 2455 (small cruiser) that's undergone a 75% refit.

Will you keep it in the water or trailer it?

Until I'm sure she doesn't have any small leaks, she'll reside on the trailer; then she'll be at one of our neighborhood slips.

i just went over my punch list and I'm almost there! Depending on the weather, after two years of work, the tentative launch date is next weekend. :D:):D:)

Took my wife to the Chesapeake Inn for our 15th anniversary last night, great food! I wish we'd have went by boat though...

Hello all,

I just joined this site, and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Joe and I live in Audubon, PA - My wife and I moor our 1994 330 Sundancer in Fairlee Creek - Great Oak Landing. Not terribly familiar with the Bay yet, as we only launched late last season. We have 3 water rats - 2 boys 11 & 9, and 1 princess 6. We're always looking for other families with kids to raft up with. Feel free to give us a shout if you're looking to put together weekend plans as we're going to try and be on the bay alot this summer.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

i just got a slip for my sailboat at the water street marina.
I launched it today, at the riverwalk marina in perryville. And i just tied it to a slip there till I'm ready to take it to water street. Boy was that boat had to back up into the slip.
the wind was blowing me all around.
the boat goes fine forward, but is nearly impossible to reverse.

The way you were talking about it I thought you would be months(I'd be years) getting it ready. So when is the first trip south of Pooles island?

hello Joe, welcome , I live in Jeffersonville near Betzwood. I have one girl and one boy, both 10. We are down most weekends, but I don't get south of Turkey point very often due to the chop around there. My bowrider doesn't ride well in much over 1-2 ft, and even less with my kids. We made it into Fairlee Creek once last year and had a great time. Last year was our first, so maybe this year we will venture alittle further. If the weather cooperates I want to try and explore more this summer.

Hello Joe and welcome aboard. You'll find a lot of friendly people and good information on iboats' forums and , if I do say so myself, this thread in particular. Anyway, Fairlee isn't that far down the Bay, I'm sure we will all manage to get together a few times during the summer. As far as my info, I live just east of the Allentown/Reading area and have three water rats of my own; all girls 9,7 and 2.5. We will be on the bay for the Fourth of July for sure, we booked a campsite at Elk Neck State Park for Wed. June 30 thru Tues. July 6. Other than that, I get down to the Wye and Chester and sometimes the Tred Avon for some commercial crabbing a few times during the season and I also try for the odd weekend here and there. I tow all the way down and back...so finances dictate boat usage. Gonna have to make some runs in the V-20 to see how she handles the bay.....yeah, that sounds like a good reason for a few more trips than usual......lol

Bill,

Thanks for the welcome. We anchored a few times last year across from the Nauti Goose (Sandy area by the RR tracks). I'll be sure to look for you when we go up there this season. I know we'll be up there every so often b/c my wife likes the little restaurant up the road from the Charlestown Marina (behind the really fancy place). (not to mention the Nauti Goose). Send me a message if you're ever down my way or just stop by slip B-63 if you're there.

Stan,

If you need a reason to make a nice trip down the Bay...I have WAY to many beers at my dock and I need help. :D Now you know you can't leave a fellow boater when he's in need. :p That' is the rule..right.

My wife and I were there on Wednesday night I wished I would have taken the boat too!! I will be going back sometime this summer and it will be by boat. Altough it was good to see it by land before hand too. Did you eat inside or out?

Kyle - Congrats on the slip and launch. So which boat are you bringin to the raftup?

Stan - congrats on the V20!! Let's see the pics!

Welcome to the other new guys as well! Hopefully we can have a larger raftup this year!!!

Speaking of raftup, anybody have any thoughts on dates? I think we had mentioned the 15 & 16 or the 22 & 23 weekends. The first works for me but not the second. Although this may be to early for some of the newer guys. Let's get some talk going and get this planned so that it happens. I need another excuse to go down to the bay. :D

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

I am looking forward to getting out more often now that the boat is running. I was out last thursday at the inner harbor watching thrusday night sail boat races. We didnt get in till almost 10pm. If you have not been down to the inner harbor after dark your missing some realy nice boating. Its nice that its all 6 mph because it realy is a slow cruise that gives you chance to talk and in our case fire up the grill on board for some great food. Anyone eles ever use a cobb grill on their boat? They work great and nothing like hot food even on a 18 foot runabout. One of my favorites is Baha citrus chicken grilled right on the boat.

I would love to propose a night anchored up near Peir 6 for a concert. Free and even though you cant see much the music always is nice to listen too. here is the link of concerts comming up. http://tickets.piersixpavilion.com/

A concert sounds like fun. I would definitely be interested in doing that.

I've heard that the Blue Angles Air Show (Wed, May 26th) is also quite an event. We've never been, but we're going to make a go of it this year. Any local knowledge about when to get there and possibly where to anchor would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to try to do the Blue Angels thing this year for the first time too!

I would have liked to get out today, but steady 35kt winds with 45kt gusts put that plan to bed

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

I drove the boat across the river today, and have in in my new slip in HDG. Early in the morning it was not that bad. before 10.

the wind was sure howling right down the river. IT said it was a west wind, but it seemed more north north west to me.
But the chop was still only about a foot. I guess it was a lot worse out on the flats. the chop was cut in half by the time it reched my marina.

rob, does it ever get choppy inisde your marina? i think your marina is much more protected than mine. no break-water, just a slip, which i am on the inside side of.

dam, Is that cobb grill a marine grill, or just a regular grill?

Good move. It was howling all day on the water. The bass boats were still out though.
I got my new A/C seawater pump installed today.

Well, it depends on the winds. Today was unusual- blowing from the southwest- so yeah, there were small whitecaps coming in from the back channel right up to my boat.
Normally the wind tends to blow N-S and we're protected by the island or town.

The 15th is out for me, the neighbors are having a graduation party and we 'have' to attend. The good news is it's a WINE TASTING party, so I'm OK with that!

I'm leaning towards the 22/23 weekend (sorry Brandon). If the weather's good I'd consider a late-nighter on Saturday if you guys want to log some night running time.
....OR someone can throw out another date. So far my summer isn't booked yet- except for the HdG fireworks!

Rob - If the 22nd weekend works best for everyone then go for it. I am sure I will catch up with you guys different times though out the summer. As far as other dates go. I think most Sundays in June work but July is already booked up with the exception of 17th / 18th weekend. Of course we will be down the weekend of the 4th. August is pretty wide open at this point.

Well, we were out in the boat some Saturday evening and this afternoon. Didn't go far because of the wind. Just anchored over near the railroad tracks above Charleston. (Speaking of that, I need to pick up a new cable for my BB so I can transfer those pics...)

Brandon I think I know where it is. I used google earth and it seems like from the posts it must be alittle deeper approach, I'm guessing, but it sounds like the bigger boats like it. I'm sure I'll get up there soon. The boat is still in storage and I can't see getting it out for the next couple of weeks to just sit in the driveway. I won't have any time to use it for 2-3 weeks.
