Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

So is the whole area where the bay meets the river packed on the 4th? Or is there still room out in the open water?

You can be miles away and still see the fire works. There is a place a mile and a half from our house, that we can see their fire works.

Glad that you chimed back in Stan. Don't know our plans for sure yet on North East's fireworks but I might be interested in rafting up. We just have a little 20' open bow boat. I will try to let you know soon.

Also, would be interested in rafting up for the fireworks on Sunday if anybody wants too. I don't know where would be the best spot to see them as this will be our first time for HDG's show.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

We are definitely going to Northeast's fireworks, but will probably miss HdG on Sunday. I'll have to make up for it by hitting Rock Hall on saturday, I guess.

Hey Stan, i just re-read your post. Are you saying that Rock Hall does fireworks on Saturday? Have you been down to see these before? I would be interested in checking them out. Any tips on what time to get there or where to anchor at? Also, how long of a ride from North East in a 20 footer?

Sorry about all the questions, just trying to gather as much info as possible to make a well informed decision.

Thanks again!

Good to hear from you again Stan. Yeah, it's great that this thread is still alive and kickin'.
Hope to see 'ya out there this season. I don't plan to travel very far, so my cruising area this year will be limited to the upper Bay.

To all: I think a Saturday "Upper Chesapeake Raftup" needs to be scheduled. I can't do it 6/13 but don't have any other commitments at this point. Who's in, and what date works?

The water is almost warm enough to swim now. It was 73 last weekend. And that is cold, but i swam for a few minutes, and i was not that cold.

In a few weeks, it should be real warm.

Sounds great to me. Would love to be able to met some of you guys and put some faces with some names. Sadly, our summer is filling up fast. If we can make it we would love to join you guys. I know right now that we will NOT be around on:

6/20
6/27
7/11
8/1
8/15

Hopefully we will get down all other weekends at least for a day anyway. (Weather permitting!) Can't believe how fast our summer is filling up and we don't even have any kids yet! Gotta get out and enjoy while we can yet ;)

Anyway, I hope that we can all work something out, a raft up sounds fun!

Hey Brandon, where will you be Sat? also what color is your boat? I'll be around HDG (upstream and down) from 11 to 4 or5 depending on how many times they want to tube. I have a white with black stripe 23' Campion bowrider, the name is pretty small on the aft freeboard. Or, just look for the white guy with a boatload of African-Americans Wife/Sister in law and 3 kids( that should make me pretty easy to spot). I have the VHF on Ch 16.

Hey Bill,

We will be around the HDG area. May anchor out at sands island some. Will spend some time tubing and sking in the Susquehanna river North of the I-95 bridge.

I have a white 20' Four Winns Bowrider. No name on the boat yet. Should be about 6 people in the boat. (I will be out with my wife, parents, sister and her boyfriend.) I posted some pics of the boat a couple of pages back. I will add another in my signature line later tonight.

We will have the VHF on and monitor 9 and 16. Feel free to give a shout! Hoping to be out from Noon till around 5pm, but we will see what happens.

Have a great day boating!

We SHOULD be out after 3 pm tomorrow. Not sure if my radio is working properly, it's 31 years old!

Here's our boat, maybe we'll see you guys. I might try the Perryville ramp.

Skargo, I know I have said this before, but I love that boat. Really neat old boat.

We will be watersking and tubing right around there (up towards Port Deposit) so maybe if I remember, I will try and hail you on the radio, channel 16 and see if yours is working ;)

Yes you did! Guess that would explain why i couldn't get you on the radio. I tried hailing you on channel 9 around 5:30 as "Twice as Nice" from "Blue Crabber" but got no response. Now I know why.

I had to use channel 9 as the Coast Guard was using channel 16 for emergency broadcasts. Evidently, 2 adults went missing off of a 19' white boston whaler in the Gunpowder River and they were conducting a search.

Arks - wish that we could stay tomorrow and say hi, maybe another time. Hope you have a great time.

Be safe out there everyone.

Brandon, looked for you, but plans changed and we went to the sand islands. My wife heard about the band on the deck at Nauti Goose so off we went. Did not pull out of Perryville until about 7. Skargo, if you went out today there I saw something just like yours(maybe a wellcraft) somewhere around the HDG bridges on my way out around noon. Alittle chilly in the water at times, But warmer than two weeks ago.

I hope the whaler crew is OK.

Yeah, me too! By the time we pulled out, there was no new info so I don't know anything else yet.

I was keeping an eye out for you too. But that explains why i didn't see you. We spent all out time in the Susquehanna River. Almost went to Sands Island but didn't then.

Hope those that are going out today enjoy it. Looked like a beautiful morning before we had to leave.

Arks, did you make it out on Sunday? I heard that weather was beautiful and the water was pretty flat.

Man I wish I could have stayed longer this weekend...

Unfortunately not. Just found this article:

http://wjz.com/local/drowning.Baltimore.County.2.1035146.html

Evidnetly they decided to go for a quick swim without life jackets and got caught in some swift currents.

No signs of any drinking on the boat either.

I guess this just re-affirms one of our boat rules. If you are in the water, you are wearing a life jacket. Does not matter how athletic you are or who you are, you are putting a life jacket on or you stay on the boat.

Be safe out there everyone!!!
