I posted the question below in the "electronics section, but didn't get any reply's. I was wondering if my fellow Chesapeake boaters may have an opinion on this topic?

Please excuse me if this is a redundant topic, but I've done a number of searches and have found a few "i just bought's", and "it should have this feature"'s, but I have not seen any real conversation about which hand-held VHF unit provides the best value.

I'm not looking for a multi-band, fancy anything...I just want it to be good at what it's supposed to do...portable emergency back-up on the boat, and portable NOAA weather station when on the shore.

I've looked at a number of units carried by West Marine, and used their "compare" feature and come to the conclusion that the $79 Uniden Atlantis250 seems to have everything I "think" I need. When I looked at all the units available (@ WM) in the $99-$199 range, the Atlantis has as good or better battery life than most of the other units, it has tri-watch, weather scan, water proof, 5W-1W... I'm trying to figure out what i'm missing? The only feature I think I'd like to have is "floating", but I don't really even know if I need that. Admittedly, I am in NO Way a tech guy, who understands any of the fine print about electronics. I want to turn the thing on, and know that I can communicate with another vessel w/in say a 3-5 mile range.

Any help you all, (ya'll for the southerners) could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You are really lucky if you went in where I think you went in, from what I hear.
There is really one way in, and that's up by the cliff.

I'm sure Stan will chime in.

I've walked both of the cuts in the "hedge" (there are actually two of them) and if you managed to scoot in through one of them the tide must've been in. Two years ago neither of those cuts existed, they've been created by erosion. There used to be trees where those two cuts are now and the trees that used to be there are now laying in the water in and around the cuts. I might try to go through there with a smaller power boat, but nothing that drafts more than a foot and a half. The cliff entrance is a much safer bet with a lot more water. So congratulations on having the guts to successfully try those little cuts, and I mean that sincerely.

last year i went in the middle entrance.
just because i didn't know about the other entrance.
it was plenty deep enough. all i need is 2 ft of water.
there were people smimming in the cut thou.
i had to wait for them to get out of the way.

I was at Lloyds creek yesterday and saw a jet ski go through one of those small cuts, and commented that he was petty brave. I don't get in there very often so I haven't seen anybody else use them, I think I'll stick with the enterance by the cliffs.

When I went through I had four feet of clearance.Tide was about half way in.Plenty wide enough. I wasn't moving very fast.New to me so I felt my way in.

Silver eagle, we were at Lloyds creek friday-monday. What kind of boat do you have? I was on my 33 Executive called Tailwagger. We were nearer to the house in the deeper water. Just got home today.
