Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Sorry about your luck, but you should learn a little about the water you boat in. It is against the law to be under sail in the C&D canal, it is also against the law to anchor in the canal. You should have done neither unless you were in EXTREME danger. If you couldn't catch a tow from a fellow boater you should have immediatly called a tow service. If you felt you needed to sail to saftey the you should have found the closest safe haven. They would have been continuing out to the DE River and anchored/sailed into DE City, you could of turned into DE City channel that is 3/4 of a mile before the river or you could have anchored in the small cove that is about 1.5 miles from the end of the canal and waited for a proper tow service. It is also shameful to tie up the fire service to tow you. Please don?t reduce the emergency response time for other boaters or myself because you are to cheap for a tow service!!!!!!!!
I tend to agree, I think Kyle has mentioned using the fire service before, kind of selfish IMO.

i tried calling for a tow on the radio, but no one answered. and i did not have the boat us number.
i didn't want to go east in the canal, because that would have just put me further from home.
Oh that makes it OK then
You need to be prepared dude, that includes having the correct numbers and maintaining your equipment properly.

Nova you?re probably right, but I hate nothing more than when the fire service is tied up for boaters that ran out of fuel or that need a tow because of their carelessness. The fire service is there for emergency situations.
Trust me, I understand completely....

I can understand you not wanting to get any further from home, but sometimes it's not about what you WANT to do, it's about what you HAVE to do. The rules about not operating in the canal under sail as well as not anchoring in the canal are in place for good reason as you found out.:)

One of the unfortunate facts that I've had to face during my boating career is that boats tend to break at the most inopportune times. Therefore, proper preparation is a necessity, including knowing the area you'll be boating in as well as the number for any marinas in the area and what channels they typically monitor.
I am fairly confident that Summit North would have sent a boat out to get you and bring you in. They're a good bunch up there and are used to dealing with broken boats on the canal.
I might also suggest for the future that little sticker with Boat US' phone number on it that comes with your Boat US membership cards gets put on or in the boat near the controls.:)

Well, hopefully we all can learn some lessons or at least be reminded about some good points from Kyles unfortunate situation.

Kyle, good luck on getting the motor working again. Hopefully you can learn from everyone elses experience here in addition to your own and not allow a similar situation to happen again!

On a side note, looks like we are going to make it down this weekend!!! If the weather co-operates, we are going to leave North East aroud 8:30 Saturday morning and head for Chesapeake City.

My parents want to check out the shops and have lunch there. I am not real interested in the shops so I will probably just hang around the water and talk to fellow boaters.

If anyone is familiar with Chesapeake City, if I am there around 9:30 in the morning, will I be able to get a slip? I was hoping that will beat a little bit of the crowd and that we would be leaving closer to the time everyone was getting there.

Then we will head back to North East and maybe anchor out for a little while. We will have the VHF on and monitor 16 and 09 while we are out.

that's the thing, no one could reach anyone on the radio that day. Neither me, the fire rescue boat, nor the marina ever had a conversation on the radio. i called them when i got the phone number from the sign on the canal. but i heard both parties hailing on my radio, they never talked to each other.

I have those boat us bumper stickers that super nova was taking about. I just never got around to putting them on my boat. they are in my truck. I prob could have waited for the current to turn, then head back thru the canal. But i would rather anchor on the side, than drift into the middle.

Brandon,
will you be down Sunday too?

Sadly, not this weekend. Can only make it down for the day Saturday.

All - we need to get some final decisions made about the following weekend! Lets make this raft up happen!

So why does the C and D canal get so much current? Is it because the delaware bay is higher than the Chesapeke bay, and there is some un-natural thing going on there due to the man made canal?

I guess there is so much current in the delaware bay because of how wide open it is to the ocean. it is like a funnel. i swear my gps said there was a 5 mph current friday night.

Years ago there were Locks at St Georges.
