We come down for the 4th for 3 or 4 days. The problem i've been having is that's a long time on a boat. After a day or so the wife's feet and ankles start to swell up. This way were not limited to the boat. Plus the pricing for the cabin wasn't bad. 46 bucks a day. Thje cabins have electric, fridge and stove. Hoping to get out atleast one day for some crabbing.

Elk Neck is great! We tent there a lot in spring and fall. They just redid the boat ramps there last year too, have not seen them since they redid them yet.
Come on Spring !!

Elk Neck is pretty nice. We camped there twice last season and enjoyed it both times. It's kept clean and patrolled regularly so there aren't really any problems with the rowdy crowd. I think the new limited alcohol rules have kept a lot of the undesirables away and made it more pleasant. Every loop has a host who is responsible to keep the restrooms clean and stocked and to report any issues to the rangers. From my limited contact, the hosts seem to be pretty decent people for the most part, not uppity pricks like you'd think. The new ramp is very nice as well and you can get a one time fee launch sticker if you are camping in the park that is good for the length of your stay......so you don't have to pay launch fees every day. I highly recommend Elk Neck for a very nice family camping experience. We have our reservation there for the week of the 4th as well.

anyone ever camp in the wintertime?
I have gone out in the woods in the winter and set up a tepee.
That way you can have a fire inside.
all you need is a tarp, and find 6-8 sapling sized sticks.

That is what i do when i get cabin fever anyway.
The trick is to make your fire on a rock, so the wet, snowcovered cround will not suck the heat from your fire.

I go tent camping year-round with the Boy Scouts. We camped 2 weeks ago in New Jersey on top of 12" of snow.

so how do you keep warm in a tent? do you just not heat it, and bundle up?

You camp on top of the snow, or shovel off a patch of clear land?

I thought about making a small tepee, infront of the tent, then draping the back of the tepee over the tent. Then the fire in the teepee might heat the tent some.

I keep warm by sleeping on top of a self-inflating sleeping pad, inside a 0-degree rated sleeping bag. If it's above 20-degrees I sometimes get too hot in the bag. The only part of me that gets cold is the tip of my nose. I also make sure to change my clothes just before going to sleep so I'm sure my clothes are dry.

I pack down the snow where I pitch my tent by walking on it. That gives me a firm base when sitting inside; I want the tent floor to be fairly firm and I don't want to risk tearing the floor if it were to sink into soft snow. I also want to be sure there are no sharp branches hidden under the snow.

I would never allow a fire near my tent. The synthetic tent fabric is too flammable, and there's risk of smoke inhalation or CO poisoning. The thin walls of the tent cannot retain heat so any heat source is only going to be useful while it's generating heat, and I would never go to sleep near an unattended fire.

one other trick that i want to try is digging a trench, and putting hot coles in there, the covering them with dirt.
Then you sleep over that spot, and it will keep you warm all night if you do it right.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

So was anybody out last friday? I got a text from a friend who said he went down to the bay, his boat is at bay boat works, but he did not say if he went out. I thought someone with an OB and the time might have ventured out for bragging rights.

I thought about it Bill, but there was still a pile of snow blocking my boat in, even though it was 70 degrees. It is now snowing again...

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Hey guys, I have a friend who is looking for a slip somewhere in or between the Pasadena or Middle River area. (My friend lives in Eldersberg). I, personally, don't think he's ready for a wet slip. He'd have to get his bottom painted and a mooring cover made. I think he would be better off with a "dry slip" somewhere with his boat on the trailer that either has in/out service or just allows you to use their ramp. I'm thinking rack storage would be too expensive. Does anyone know of any marinas that have trailer "slips"? My friend got a real nice price quote on a wet slip here http://whiterocksmarina.com/ but I wanted to show him the availability and prices of some dry options.
