Shakedown Cruise

Hey guys.. I just wanted to post some pics from our Shakedown Cruise... We bought this boat 3 weeks ago. My first impression is that it's a great boat for the Chesapeake. It handles the chop very well and will allow us to explore a lot further south and sleep over without having to camp anywhere. It's a beautiful boat and is in terrific condition... Anyway, here are some pics.

It's a 1990 Formula 242 SS

I have Scott to thank for this boat, because he was the one who told me to check out 242's...

Re: Shakedown Cruise

Temps in the 50's this weekend! I don't think my wife is willing to boat in anything less than 70 degree temps. Dang.

This was my last run, the day before Hurricane Irene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpvM3c3dNa8

I was doing a 'shakedown' run on the Sassafras -- I had my engine builder tone the beast down a bit, because she was way too finicky with the more aggressive settings. More turn-key now. Good for around 60 and much, much smoother and friendlier and low speeds, too. Of course, as soon as it ran perfect, my gauges got whacked out. Got them ironed out now..

Due to the weather.... My boating season.... might... be.... over..

She's fast too. We hit 60 with 4 of us aboard, and Andrew said it felt like there was plenty more. Awesome boat!

Come on! We still have a full month of boating left! It will be in the 60's this weekend, not too bad. I can't believe no one was out Sunday, what a beautiful day, despite the debris, which was even worse than the previous weekend.

Here's a video I shot of Andrew's new boat taking off...

Re: Fall Colors Run

I'M back, did you miss me? :p got back late Sunday from our houseboat vacation on Lake Powell, what an incredible trip!!!! Looks like I haves OT of catching up to do on here and the Facebook thread.

Hoping to make the fall colors run too, but won't know till closer to the time. I do remember the trip a couple years ago Scott, great fun!

Also, I've been wondering- what happened to Bowman's sailboat?
Did he successfully retrieve it? What damage did it have? Where is it now?

Last I heard they were able to recover it pretty easy at high tide Saturday morning after the flooding, but I don't know where he has it now. He said that the 2 front bow cleats were ripped off, but that was about the extent of the damage. Hope he makes out alright.

I will post some pics of our trip soon!

The wife won't boat if it ain't above 70! What can I tell you? I'd be out there in a sweat shirt.... there's nothing more I'd rather do!

I can't complain. I have the Scarab because she said, "Go buy a cool boat. We need a cool boat".

Wow, I knew that 4 million tons of silt had to go somewhere.

http://m.themariner.net/mobile/nautical_news/article_10f217cc-e9fc-11e0-b25b-001cc4c03286.html

Due to the recent flooding, the approach channel to the city of Havre de Grace's marina has silted in.

Director of Public Works Larry Parks notes that boaters can access the basin through the back channel. "It's a four-mile trek around, but they can get in and out that way," Park said.

Recent reports note that current depths average from 3- 4-ft. at high tide. The City in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers is determining the full extent of the problem. Additionally, they are working with the Army Corps and Maryland Department of Natural Resources to facilitate emergency dredging.

"The Corps has done what they can at this point. It will be October at the earliest before we see any action," Parks added.

The anticipated cost of the project could reach $250,000 and city officials have high hopes for Federal emergency funding.

City officials will update their web site at www.havredegracemd.com as additional information becomes available.

Wow, about the silt issue, I almost went to HdG to launch on sat. We finally made it out this year, Sat the 1st! Better late than never. Water wasn't too bad north of Rogues Harbor up to the guiding light past the Bohemia but it was choppy down at T.P. with 1 - 2ft chop by 4pm. I was able to make the needed carb adjustments after a head gasket repair & was able to make 23mph by GPS. Nice work for a 50+yo motor. We'll try to get out again the 8th or 9th to be sure she's ready for a fall colors run, as posted on the Facebook page.

I know some maybe thinking just getting out! I look at it this way... We're ready for an early start next season :) BTW when do boat fishing and crabbing licenses go on sale for 2012? Neither of us has fished or crabbed for many years and are looking forward to it in 2012.

Hopefully weather holds for the Fall Colors Run. Maybe we can start meeting some of you (our 2nd year of trying)

So what is the plan for the fall run? I need a good run before I put her to sleep for the winter. I already reserved the date with the admiral and she will be with me unless its a bit cold or gray or choppy or mucky or windy or trashy or she is not feeling well. I am the only one on the planet without face book so keep me up to speed here if you dont mind? I like not having face book. I still get surprised when people tell me stuff when I run into them. Between face book and texting speaking is becomming a dieing art. :)

So who will be out this weekend? I plan on a run from DE city to the Chesapeake Inn for lunch on Sunday. My wife will have to see part of the eagles game so we should be there by 1. Is there anybody here from Cove marina? I have a buddy with a 25' searay looking for a place to keep it and he is thinking about the Cove.
